About 90%.

Yes, you'll get shitbirds. The problem becomes that there are legitimate handicaps that aren't always active impairments.

What do I mean when I say that?

Take a family with a severely autistic child, with a dashing issue. The kid isn't physically incapable, but they do present a real danger to themselves and others, if you put them way the hell out in the parking area.

Now, you aren't just protecting a kid, you are also protecting the property of other people in the parking lot. Is the kid going to dash away every time? No. It just takes the once, though, and someone ends up with an unnnecessary death of a kid on their conscience.

Is it ideal? Nah. Is it a compromise I can live with? Sure. I'll begrudge them having a better parking spot, but I can intellectually justify it.

What % of people that park in them (with state issued permits) are actually impaired to the point that need them?

I have my dad's in my truck and I have never been anywhere where they were full except for places like restaurants or the like where they only have one or 2 spots. Grocery stores and the like always have a couple empty. If they were not mostly empty I would question folks using them but they are, at least in my experience. We usually don't use it when is in the truck because he has a wheelchair and a scooter and I push him in from across the lot...but lots of older people with bad arthritis use them nd walk in and out....thats who they should be reserved for.

The new thing that annoys me are the people who pull up and park in front of the store by the entrance, disrupting the flow of traffic. At least the """handicap""" parkers get out of the damn way.

The one place the handicapped spaces are always full and I hear lots of complaints about are at casinos. Interpret that how you want.

For some reason in Louisiana the handicap spots are largely for able bodied black people. In the more rural areas they are for obese people.

Spin-off question: When you see someone park in a handicapped spot, do you feel better when you see that they are obviously (or at least kinda) handicapped?

My guess is that every judgmental know-it-all posting snide remarks about people using handicap parking tags are either jealous or clueless

Clueless, maybe.. but anyone who thinks people are ‘jealous’ of those who use handicapped parking passes is delusional, or a fricking lazy fatass .

Absolutely. I have a pass because of my lungs, but unless I just can't find a spot at all or it is very far away, I won't take it up for someone who needs it more.

At least in Texas, once you are approved, to get a new one you simply bring back the old one. It's easy to see how that system can get abused.

I was at the store the other day and some baw pulled up and parked in one. (He had the permit hanging on his windshield). Baw jumped out just walking along and looked like he just left the gym. He was jacked.

So yeah it's abused.

I'd say at least 50% of the people parking there are parked illegally.

I've always thought that a local news segment with a news crew interviewing people who park in handicapped spots would be hilarious. Of course one of the reporters would probably get shot, so they may not go for it.
