I was on 3rd Saturday looking for somewhere to eat and schlitz was the only thing opened. It was a ghost town. There used to be some fun day drinking going on between those bars and now half the storefronts are for lease signs. I’m sure there’s more traffic at night but I didn’t expect to basically be the only one there for blocks

Covid wrecked the restaurants downtown.

How many blocks in the middle of a vibrant city’s business district have just set there vacant for years and not been developed?

The street car idea, that the federal government was almost completely paying for, that would've connected downtown and LSU, would've been so damn awesome. Game weekends that would've been so cool and it would've absolutely encouraged LSU kids to go downtown more considering how rampant DUIs are these days.

But SWB canceled it for no fricking reason and got nothing else from the government in return. All because it "appeared" to her constituents to only help white people.

She's a vile piece of shite.

She probably had the wrong intentions, but she actually got this right.
The idea was a loser, and it would have cost the parish millions over time.

The general idea is still solid but not with a street car. A dedicated lane with a fake streetcar bus would’ve been sufficient and much cheaper to operate and maintain long term

There is serious need for other infrastructure downtown.

It’s such BS that Broome killed downtown

Doesn’t matter. The Covid restrictions would have killed a lot of restaurants even if Kip were in charge. It hit every city. It screwed up Chicago’s loop too.

They’ll come back slowly.

I had that idea back in the 80's. Buy a block in NBR, wall it up and build townhomes and condos.

Dallas and Houston had a lot of these vacant lots that were used for parking up until about 10 years ago. Pittsburgh still has some right now.

I don’t like it, but it’s actually pretty common.

The only thing weird about this one is that there are incredible River views and it is a desirable area. It was owned by people that could have sold it multiple times to developers, but didn’t. Things like the IBM building, La Cap, new Hotels, and City Plaza went elsewhere on plots that were available.

And maybe that’s a good thing. I’d like to see something really big go up there.

Maybe, but half of 3rd street boarded up between January of 2017 and January of 2020, i.e. before Covid. Broome waged a crusade on bar-hopping out of spite for a political rival.

Good. I hope it succeeds. I do t want this town to remain a shithole.

It's a shithole in large part to power brokers like Engquist buying influence at City-Hall to line his own pockets.

Good for him for trying this but Engquist is a POS.

I’ve never personally met the guy, but I know different people that have known him in many different capacities for a very long time and I have always heard very good things about him, from business to personal.

Again though, I have no personal experience with him.

Yeah, it is pretty sad. There are a few downtown spots I still enjoy: The Vintage, Cocha (one of the best restaurants in town, IMO), Tsunami, River Room.. but there isn't a ton going on that's for sure.

That’s especially sad considering we were so close around 2008-2012. It was really becoming a fun place. I had some great times at the Roux House, that wine bar, and a few others. I never really cared for The Red Star but it had its regulars that loved it.

So close and now it’s what could have been.
