HAMMOND, La. (WAFB) - The Hammond City Council has approved a measure asking Mayor Pete Panepinto to remove the city’s police chief, Edwin Bergeron Jr.
The council voted 3 to 2 during a meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 8. The city’s public information officer confirmed the vote to WAFB Tuesday night.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

There isn't much info here, but I am assuming the Chief of Police is an elected position in Hammond right? If so I didn't realize a city council can ask a mayor to remove an elected official in that city.

There’s a video. My neighbor just told me about it.

I do not think Chief of Police is an elected position in Hammond.

Where is a city police chief an elected position?

Sheriffs are elected. Police chiefs are appointed.

There may be some municipality where it is, but I've never lived in one.

They can ASK anything under the sun.

It's an elected position in Crowley, LA.....it leads to some shitty police chiefs in all honesty

Why?
Yikes, he's the third chief in less than four years.

Some residents criticized Bergeron based on a leaked 30-second video posted recently on social media. The video shows two officers, including Bergeron, speaking with a handcuffed suspect in an interview room when the suspect appears to lunge across the table. The officers struggle with the suspect on top of the table for several seconds before the table breaks and the suspect falls through.
quote:
The incident was reviewed by internal affairs and the FBI, according to a number of people who spoke at the meeting, and Bergeron was cleared. The mayor has described the video as an incomplete account.
I have my opinion of the above but then I read this
quote:
Other residents mentioned a 2002 lawsuit that accused Bergeron, a Hammond police officer at the time, of trying to dissuade a college student from filing rape charges against one of Bergeron's fraternity brothers. The woman died by suicide two months after the rape. The suit was settled for a confidential sum.
quote:
Bergeron said at a public hearing Monday that he can definitely understand the concerns surrounding the suicide but said he took multiple lie detector tests at the time.
If this is the situation I know of I was close to the person that committed suicide

Baker, Zachary, Walker, all elect their chiefs.
It’s all how the scope of government is laid out in each city.

If memory serves, the selection of the police chief of Zwolle, LA is determined by a cockfight.

Add Slidell.
In Covington, the Chief is appointed (and can be "un-appointed") by the Mayor ; )

If he was elected the mayor couldn't touch him. He's appointed.
