Generally speaking the censorship of free speech by state and local governments is usually a sign of terrible things to come. Its not a good thing.

Even worse reshaping history based on restricting free speech has much more in line with fascism than democracy.

Eta: Why is it that some people think that some ideas think the ability tk think freely is too dangerous?

Yep. These are scary times, and I don't really feel that's all too alarmist.

That's just stupid though. You can't judge people from the 18th, 19th, or even 20th century by 21st century standards.

I thought his point about why statues exist and why that can change over time was pretty solid. If you're removing statues of slave owners, Jefferson and Washington should be considered. If you're removing Confederate leaders, Jefferson and Washington are immune.

I took his comments to mean that you should question why you're doing what you're doing.

If he had stopped there, sure. He didn't though.

This is fricking stupid. Removing Presidents for doing something legal at the time is fricking dumb. You'd have to erase all history of this country while slavery was allowed to appease that kind of thinking.

I asked you a question a few days ago but the thread had died down so I'm not sure if you were aware.

Do you find Confederate statues to be even the slightest bit weird considering they/we lost? It would be akin to El Paso erecting a Santa Anna statue.

I understand why the South did it, but there aren't many examples of that kind of thing happening in the rest of the world.

Thats kind of the goal of the mob and political leaders that embrace this line of thinking. Some thoughts are too dangerous to be allowed to continue.

I agree, but I took his comments as a call to reflect on the logic being used, not necessarily a comment in support of removing Jefferson and Washington.

Wanting to remove confederate status, while a huge waste of time and money, isn't anything egregious. I personally wouldn't waste my time with it, but to each their own.

Wanting to remove, or even discuss removing, statues of former presidents, particularly ones of founding fathers, is a problem.

I don't find it weird at all. These weren't some foreign invaders, which would be weird.

The rest of the world isn't the supposed best country in the world, so I don't particularly care what precedents that sets.

I don't really care to discuss statues anymore but people are crazy over that fricking Hamilton play.

It's coming to the Orpheum here next year and as season ticket holders we can buy 4 tickets. One of the parents from the kids school offered $1,000 dollars for 2.

Crazy.

It's a pretty dangerous practice to assume motivations like this, it's an easy way to short-circuit your own ability to be objective about arguments.

But that's common for jewish puppets like yourself who only want to end America through modern slavery.

I dont. Theres many examples around the world of this line of thinking. Take the Irish for example: how many monuments do they have up of their failed rebellions to the crown prior to independance? Or how about why theres so many statues of Oliver Cromwell, even in Ireland/UK, of the same person that raped, burned, and pillaged his way through most of Scotland and Ireland? Thats not to mention Napoleon in France, or even the Kaiser in Germany, or even Stalin in Russia...

I dont see the problem with localities honoring the people they believe fought bravely in whatever conflict.

Why not? I know there's a big difference, but the one offensive thing... the thing that apparently "counts" is what they have in common. They owned slaves.

If that's the scarlet letter that can't be removed, and the reason why confederate monuments MUST come down, then that's the reason why these presidential monuments ALSO must come down. Logically, that makes sense.

To state otherwise is hypocrisy.

So I say to the the Left, fight on... let this be the hill you die on. Because you can't separate one slaver from another. They are all irredeemably bad. So, goodbye Washington Memorial, nice knowing you, Jefferson Memorial, and light the dynamite for Mount Rushmore. Cleanse it ALL.

Otherwise, kindly shut the frick up about Southern monuments and slavery.
