I can’t stress the benefits of youth football when it comes to discipline & team camaraderie.

The same benefits could be had from a dozen other sports where you are not taking hits to the head.

When I played little league it was based on weight. 95 lbs 110 lbs. Etc. You played on the team in your weight class. It had nothing to do with age. Had that changed?

I disagree completely. Very few sports require the amount of teamwork to be successful that football does

Honestly, youth football is the only time a lot of people will get a chance to play the sport. I couldn’t disagree more. It teaches kids a lot of lessons about life. Brett has just gotten soft in his age, and rubbing elbows with people who are manipulating his soft brain.

You can still learn the fundamentals of the game without playing tackle football.

Right now HS teams are playing 7-on-7s against each other. When it comes to basketball, baseball and soccer, it can be played pretty much all year and a few times a week. Football is not played all year around and once a week. There is a reason for that. The more you play football, the more it wears you down and the more likely a player will get a serious injury.

I am not at all saying they should do away with football, I don't want to see that at all, but I do think the game can be played without tackling until 9th grade. Kids can find out if they want to play beyond 8th grade without being exposed to blows to the head, that can have long term damage.

I think that's pretty much the case. I see problems at middle school/Jr High-grades 6 through 8 or 7 through 9-both have possibilities of big weight swings over a couple of grades and often too few players to have a sort of junior varsity to use weight as a qualifier.

I don’t think concussions had as big an effect on Brett’s long term problems as his drinking, driving, and the drug addictions related to his accident.

That’s all fine and dandy if you want to forbid your child from partaking. That’s your prerogative. But to call for legislative action to decide for everyone in the country is complete bullshite not the ideals of this country.

You can learn offense through non-tackle football though you will still have issues learning to wrap up once you start getting hit.

Defense? You can learn to ball hawk through non-tackle and that’s about it. Non-tackle doesn’t teach you how to take down a Marshawn Lynch type who bowls over everyone in his path.

My kids will play flag football until middle school. No reason to play tackle before then unless it’s in the yard. Youth sports have tried to emulate pro sports too often by making seasons longer, changing rules, etc. A 12 year old kid shouldn’t play baseball year round. He shouldn’t be taking head shots in football either.

My 12 yr old plays soccer all yesr around, but luckily we're on one of the two month long breaks. It's a great all year around sport...but since it's just tournament ball there really is no season.

Again, I'll ask: where are these hordes of adults now in their 40s and 50s that are spit dribbling idiots from playing tackle football through high school? And when I played youth football we had suspension helmets. I don't know of a single guy my age that has cognitive or mental issues from playing football. If the problem is as prevalent as it is being stated, surely I'd know of at least one person whose brain has been scrambled. I'm willing to bet no posters in their 40s or 50s can name someone, either, who's had concussion related problems.

The thing is though, aren't CTE problems shite like depression, anxiety, aggression and other mental and mood related illnesses - are you saying you don't know anyone with these types of issues? Its hard to tell if that is just an issue someone would have had anyway or if CTE contributed to it or maybe even caused it.

I don't see why kids need to play tackle football up until high school.

Naw hoss, it's about concussions and a decision to let your kids play football.

You don’t learn how to tackle, nor do you learn overcoming adversity or teamwork. Little boys need that as they’re becoming men, in much the same as they need to be little boys and not little girls. They need to play rough, get some cuts and bruises, and suck it up. That’s all part of the learning curve as a little boy.

Man, we regularly played tackle football without pads from probably 2nd grade on up. I really don’t see the cause for action here.

What i do see however is a cause for concern as it pertains to how feminine our society has become, and it’s fingerprints are all over this one.
