Mom and Dad split when I was 4. He barely had an impact on my life and me growing up. He emails my siblings and I on our birthdays and that’s about it. As a man, I’d say I’m better at this time but I’m young. He did help me to understand the man I want to be though by basically laying out the blue prints for what NOT to do. I at least thank him for that.

As much as an influence as my father was to me, he was a flawed man. He was unnecessarily cruel at times, and didn't mind slapping his wife or his sons around (I think my sister escaped that).

He had occasional drinking issues, and wasn't always faithful to my mother. But he left four kids who work, pay taxes, and never had any trouble with the law.

He proved himself in battle (Korea), which I will never do, but he never wanted me to have the chance. So, he beats me there.

Maybe not the man he was, but I'm a better person.

I'd say I measure up to my biological father pretty well considering he never worked an honest job, was in and out of prison, and died from a heroin overdose, penniless and alone.

My stepdad ( I actually consider him my dad) is another story. I've got a lot of work to do before I even attempt to measure myself against him.

My opinion of my father changed over the years from outright hero worship as a kid and young man to understanding my father was just as flawed and human as everyone else as I got older.

My dad is the greatest man I’ve ever known. I do not measure up to him but man I try. If I can get close, I know I’ll be a good man, great father and husband. My goal is to try and get close because I know I’ll never surpass him in my eyes

My dad was shot... had it stitched up then had a friend cut the bullet out of him and he made it into a keychain months later. Unless I get hit by a car and walk it off I don't think I could top it.

Speaking of your dad... Younger guys of the OT appreciate your dad now, when my father was a younger man, 20s to 60s he could do anything, I’m talking fixing and building things. When he was in his 70’s he broke Senior Olympic bench press and curling records, he was in awesome shape for a man his age.

He and my mother were in a car accident in ‘16 where their SUV rolled 3 times and he was ejected from the vehicle. The Jimmy which they were riding in was sitting across his chest. When the fire department got there and pulled him out, he thanked them, other than a laceration on his head, and a minor TBI he did fine, not one broken bone. One fireman was quoted as saying, “that’s one tough old man”...

He’s now 83 with early stages of dementia, he’s a shell of himself. He recently broke his hip and now is in a skilled nursing unit for rehab. It’s really sad seeing him at this stage in life. He’s make strides in the right direction to get himself home.. He’s determined to get the hell out of that place..

My 2 cents..

I stack up reasonably well with my dad who is a great guy and was a wonderful father who has his faults. We both pale in comparison to my paw paw, his father, who was like a 2nd dad to me.

My dad is my hero. Straight up. Was the son of sharecroppers, and grew up with an unwaveringly positive attitude despite losing his father at age 8. Applied himself to pull himself up out of poverty and earn a degree from the university in his backyard that his mom and uncles had been custodians for: Texas A&M. Served 22 years as an officer in the US Air Force, and fathered 9 kids (2 adopted)--all with the same woman. He's a man of faith and staunch in conservative politics, and I followed in his footsteps on both counts. I'm honored to bear his name (I'm a "III" irl) and have passed it on to my own son.

I try to live up to his example every day. Truly blessed to have him in my life.

Dad served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, was married for 66 years (until my mom passed), and was a great guy.

I don't measure up, and never have.
