rigid gender roles.

What does this even mean? Men are gay If they wash dishes? Jesus what century is this?

My son is not too good to wash dishes or do laundry, and my daughter is not too good to cut grass or help in the garage. And they are well rounded children because of it.

Just because I work all day doesn't mean I'm not too good to come home and help with the kids, cooking, dishes, laundry, etc. Sounds like you need to get over yourself, or you're incredibly lazy.

If your wife works what you describe is an equitable distribution of the labor around your home. When my wife worked I did the same.

Now that my wife doesn't work we split the duties. Her duties are things on the inside of the home and mine are on the outside. She takes care of domestic stuff and I take care of - finances, home repair, car upkeep, the lawn maintenance, providing financially for our family and so on. (Honestly, I think she has a better deal)

One day when you mature a little more you will figure out that other folks can ascribe to behavior different than yours to without being deficient in some manner.

For instance, notice that nowhere did I accuse you of being effeminate or subservient because you like to cook. That's just plain ridiculous. You live your life in a manner suitable to you and I think that's great.

You're just being obtuse. There was never a sense that Grandpa was too good to do the dishes. Again, you're judging a book by it's cover.

You also know what gender roles are and it has nothing to do with being fricking gay.

As Grandma has aged, the men have started doing more domestic chores. However, when she was more able bodied, she wouldn't even let us in the damn kitchen. Even older, she fidgets and asks for a glass of wine because she'd rather being doing the dishes.

This is pretty much how we do things at our home and it works great for both of us. Her role is just as important as mine and her contribution to the family is just as important as mine. Without me doing what I do, she could not do what she does. And the same is true for me. Without her playing her part, I couldn't play mine. I respect what she does as she respects what I do.

He does seem oddly defensive that someone dare have a different way of going about their life than how he goes about his life.

It's like some liberals forget the driving force of judgmental-ism that they hate in some christian right is in them as well.

Defining behavior is never a good thing whether it's saying you have to do the laundry or you shouldn't do the laundry. Look at the heart behind it.

Wasn't being defensive. The "mixed gender roles" comment gave me the impression that helping with domestic stuff is somehow gay or not for "real men."

I want my kids to be able to function on their own in life. My parents always did the "gender role" stuff and when they got divorced they couldn't function on their own for a long while.

If my wife cooks, she usually sets the plates. If I cook, I usually set the plate. If we are at a function/public, we usually get our own food, but it isn't unheard of for one of us to get the other something to eat.
