Because those things are statistically more likely to result in harm to your child than some random dude snatching them up.

But I understand your point. Fear is not rational. Especially when talking about our children.

You're preaching to the choir here. My daughter turned 7 last month. Every night at bedtime I carry her up the stairs and unless she gets up before me in the morning I go up to her room and bring her back down. Why? Because I'm scared she'll fall going up or down the stairs. Make sense? Nope. I still do it though.

t's about allowing trivial statistics and fear mongering videos to influence your actions.

I don't think the average person thinks their kid is going to be abducted unless they're with their kids 24/7.
I look at stuff like what this guy did (although I think all parties were in the know) as a reminder that bad shite can happen, and we do need to maintain some level of awareness. I personally don't think if my kid is on facebook then they're doomed for abduction, so lock all the doors and never let them out of my sight. I just see this as, like I said before, a reminder that tragedies like Polly Klass, etc happen. Or, even on a smaller scale, using it as a teaching tool to show your kids how easy it is to gain access to people over the internet.

I get where you're coming from, but the problem is most parents are legitimately more worried about 1 in a million horror stories than stuff that happens literally every day. You never see videos go viral on Facebook about how important it is to never take your eyes off your kid while they're in the pool, but you constantly hear about the epidemics of child abductions and brain eating amoebae

Watching this video gives me a side business idea....start a company that offers the service this guy provided and charge the parents to teach their kids not to be complete morons. Helicopter parents in the burbs would eat it up.

I think this dude is doing this as a way to get off to underage girls. He looks like a pedo himself. He'll go down Jared style in no time.

totally agree but maybe not about the pool stuff, I see it constantly and pay attention to it alot because a coworker lost her daughter in a drowning accident at their own house. Middle of the summer on a weekend, the family is taking a nap inside including the daughter. She wakes up and goes outside and gets in the pool and drowns. Hit the community hard so seeing stuff about pool safety is pretty common for my area. Maybe not in other places, i guess. This hits home for me because of the Justin Bloxom case. I saw the cab on the side of the road going to work the morning before they found him. I didnt think anything of it at the time but when the news broke, it really hurt my soul.

Exactly. It hit you personally. Again, I understand that most fear is irrational. That doesn't make it less real.

Getting them there is the easy part. Why don't you put up an educational video on getting them to keep their mouth shut afterwards?

There is rational thought and talking about ideal principles of parenting.

Then there is the real deal where you're actually a parent.

I have sat on both sides and will say that actually being a parent is an entirely different animal than talking about "what I will do when I am a parent" or "what parents should do/think/say".

If you're a parent and have fears, whether rational or not, do not beat yourself up over it. It's a very normal animal instinct that kicks in.

that one example doesn't make the statistics change. "stranger danger' is a very rare occurrence and there are a lot more important things to teach kids about...like being mindful of their family, who is MUCH more likely to kidnap and/or rape them

They are much more likely to because they have far greater access to the children and a built in trust factor.
You should empower your kids to speak out against anyone, family included, that harms them, but there's not much you can do to prevent a 4 year old from going with his dad.

People talk far too much about statistics in these discussions, as if that makes a difference when it's your own kids you're talking about.

How about this statistic....the # of girls victimized by online predators (at least partially due to their parents' lack of oversight) has increased by an infinite % in the last 30 years.

i agree, which is why more resources should be devoted to ensuring children understand that trust can be violated and family members can hurt them. most importantly, the children need to know that if they tell the parents about the abuse, then the repercussions are not their fault. i'd imagine most cases of family abuse are kept quiet b/c the children are told all sorts of family drama will occur if they tell.
