Tuesday night on History is a show called "Forged in Fire". Kind of like the cooking contest morphed into making knives/swords/spears/axes from surprise ingredients/methods.
I record it to skip the commercials. Pretty interesting. They've been given old lawnmowers, wrecked cars, old tools, all kinds of stuff, to convert to knives with a time limit and perhaps some style parameters.
Forging your own steel may be one of the best uses of Liquid Paper currently. Watch an episode or 2 to find out why. lol

Reading through the thread, it seems the chain is what gives the blade its mottled look. He also added plenty of steel powder.
