It was his fault. They are trying to lowball him at like 14k.
He had a 2017 Chevy Colorado z71 with 140k miles. He is saying that his truck goes for like 23k.
He told them he wouldn't take the 14k. He still owes like 20k on the truck
Is there anything he can do besides contact the insurance commission?
Has full coverage but I don't believe he had gap insirance.
Ahh my favorite topic, overbuying cars when you dont have the money.
Not understanding how depreciation works. Etc etc.
Piece of advice for all you people who are reckless with their money, stop. Live within you rmeans, no one cares what you drive, no one is looking at you.

I dont know whether to be more shocked at the lack of education on the topic in schools or in the home front.
Ill say this, I wont depend on the schools to teach finance. They think they operate with a blank check apparently.
Its sad people do not teach their kids how to live properly. They learn from parents who are living paycheck to paycheck for appearances.
After a while, this will fail.

gap insurance is a scam but does help.
How is it a scam? It is for the OP's very situation.

Has full coverage
I hate this fictitious phrase, it is like unicorn coverage it doesn't exist.
But anyway...
It is fun to shite on someone that has made a poor decision and now paying for it but it seems everyone has gotten that taken care of already.
He needs to find out what the insurance companies requires for comps.
Normally it will be cars listed within ~75 miles, listed with VIN number available, same year, make, model, and trim level mileage should be as close as possible but they can easily adjust for differences in mileage. Find at least 3 more is better.
Also make sure they have listed all the OEM options I have found those missing in the past and had to document them. They don't pay for aftermarket stuff normally.
When he does this homework he will start to see that his idea of the value is higher than reality but he may be able to get a little more.
The last car I had to total I was able to get them up 62% over their initial offer with comps but it actually was a case of "I know what I have", there were only 4 comps for sale in the US at the time.

Private Party value for that truck in excellent condition is 17K.

He should receive NADA retail plus his tax credit. For those mentioning KBB, it's irrelevant.

Truck is not worth 23k.
He can negotiate a bit but not much.

At least tell us she broke up with this dumbass.
You cannot possibly keep letting this moron bang your niece and accidentally get her pregnant with his moron genes.

It’s his own fault for owing $20k on an eight year old truck with 140k miles on it.

Pretty sure they're offering the wholesale price.
Carmax has one online (not local) with 83,000 miles for $22,998.

Show them comps! Fight it!
I've done it and won two times!
