Problem is so many states border it and would want the name.

So it’s not much more gulf in Mexico than in the US, but there is more. So it’s aptly named.
and tex was mex when gulf was named. So more like 2000+ Mex and 900- not Mex.

In my circle of friends it is the gulf of America. Has been for many years.

I wish OP was trolling, but I sort of think he didn't really stop to consider that Mexico is the largest shore border to the gulf and that it doesn't just stop at the end of Texas.
