I occasionally got sent in to buy the cigarettes

Cigs and 6 packs were bought by 10 year olds on the reg where I grew up. Hurricane Laura finally took out the bar/grocery store. Sad day to see it gone.

Yep, no keys, windows down. I’d turn all the switches and push all the buttons so the radio would come on too loud & on the “wrong” station and the windshield wipers & turn signals would be on when she started the car. I was a lovely child who became bored* easily. She started making me bring a book along, which finally stopped my shenanigans.

*whenever I told her I was bored, my mother would say, “Go sit on the floor and let your feet hang.” Ha!

When I was a kid in the 70s my momma would hand me a dollar and send me into the store to buy her a pack of Pall Mall and get me a candy bar.

We had to stay in the car when she'd visit her fried Sam. If we didn't tell Dad about Sam, we'd get a snowball.

We had a 61’ Ford Galaxy. No a/c.
But we stayed in the car some when she ran errands.

We had a 60 Biscayne. 2 door, manual, no AC. We would rather stay in that thing than go shopping with mom.

A couple of shopping centers had little playgrounds we would use at times.

No, my mom left me in other people’s cars. She was crafty like that. Sadly for her, I was never abducted.

Oh yeah when I got "older", like 8 years old, I'd get sent in to buy the cigs too. Then when I was like 12 the stations would look at me funny and I'd have to point to the car and say it's for my parents in the car, not me.

If we were buying groceries, we would go into the store with mom. I had to walk on one side of the buggy, my brother on the other side. She would place her purse in the buggy and lay her hickory switch across her purse. If you screwed up, here came the hickory without hesitation or mercy. The 70s in ritual north Alabama was a different time and place where seeing a kid getting whipped in the store for messing up was nothing out of the norm.

Yes...and one time it downtown mobile mid 70s. middle brother was 9ish ...I was 5. Mom had to run /drop off something at a place just above the west side of the tunnel in Mobile right where there is a green information sign for east bound traffic. Now there is a fence but we climbed out on the sign and came back before she got back. She had now idea. Many years later older brother was in the Army and in desert storm. Mom comments about being worried and the dangerous situation and I open my mouth and say " naw... The time we climbed out on the interstate sign by the tunnel when we were kids is probably more dangerous". Mom was pissed... She didn't know about for ...20 yrs but was pissed that it happened

Mom and dad would leave us in the car without keys but manual windows so we could at least catch a breeze.

No keys because my sister at age 3 crashed the car into the utility room at the end of the carport. Dad left the car running when he scrambled back in the house to grab his tie and sis was just barely able to get the shifter into drive.

One time my dad left me (3) and my older brother (6) in the car so he could go in to Central Hardware. Man couldnt of been in there for more than 5 minutes before my brother convinced me to put my finger on the car cigarette lighter that he had heated up. Oddly enough we were still left in the car after that incident.

If I need to run into walgreens or walmart and my 13 year old daughter doesn't want to go in I just give her the keys,
leave engine running with A/C running and turn off the 30 min max idle mode.
If I'm going to Walgreens she usually wants to go in to buy makeup.

I went to work with my dad one day and he stopped by some subcontractor's office that he was doing a job with and left me in the car, we were parked on a incline, I was probably 5-6, possibly 7, I started messing around with the gear shifter, '66 Chevy Belaire, I put it in either neutral or reverse and it began to roll down hill, don't know how I had the presence of mind or how I was able to reach it, but was able to get my foot on the brake, I set there holding that brake with everything I had until my dad was finished with his meeting
