I put in 6 years at Publix through highschool and college. I absolutely loved the job. I would go in at 5am, "throw stock" until 1pm and then have the rest of the day off for school or free time. Working the trucks was a tough job and provided a great venue to build comradery among my coworkers. Those two or three hours we had in the morning before the store opened where we had free reign to throw stock like crazy were pretty fun.

I shop at a small grocery store family owned. The workers are always pleasant and helpful, but they kicked it up a notch in the last week.
The owner doesn't like tipping but I told him to suck it up, because his cashiers & bag boys were pulling 12-14 hr shifts every freaking day and if I wanted to give them a hefty tip as appreciation, he can just deal with it. He smiled, thanked me and moved on....

my wife told me the thing that was frustrating to the point of being funny was all the people calling in to complain they were out of bottle water, and the guy on one call flipped out and told her it was ridiculous they didn't plan ahead to have more on hand.
my wife asked him if he thought the water was going to be shut off due to the virus, and the guy said no - and my wife replied, well i think you will be just fine. truck come sin tomorrow.

Its a low paying thankless job. The only benefit is you get to work in air conditioning.

Keep in mind that these folks only let you buy what they allow you to buy. They have their stashes in the back behind doors with “Employees Only” signs!!!
But seriously, feel free to tip those workers. When I was a stock clerk in high school, my regular customers (elderly mostly) tipped me a quarter “for a Coke.”

she just texted me and said they were putting her on a cash register - which she normally cannot do because she is the book keeper for the store, but they are slammed and workers started calling out

not all places Bob - where she works, they arent allowed to set anything aside - like TP. and believe me it sucks, cause we are down to our last 2 rolls.

I know about 6 people that have worked for Publix for a long time. Most of them passed $1 million in Publix stock before their 25th year. These are admin, production and truck driving types.

Grocery stores have thin margins as it is. 50% would break a bunch of smaller places that aren’t Winn Dixie, Kroger, Rouses.

Employees will get a bonus, but it won’t be extravagant.
The run on grocery stores is going to save a lot of struggling retailers and even distributors who were hurting like AG Baton Rouge, they’re not about to give it all away.
The distributor I work with was down 12% over the last year prior to this.

I just witnessed some a-hole throw a fit in a Walmart grocery because the cashier told him he couldn’t buy six containers of paper towels. Started yelling and insulting her until management quickly came over.
I agree with OP. Those low-wage workers are probably dealing with a lot of shite.

My wife (no pics) just told me local Krogers are paying people $17/hour to help restock and clean. Can't keep up with demand.

Yeah, I went with a quickness to get a loaf and man, there must have been 100 loaves restocked after I left that aisle. They're doing a kick arse job for sure.
