This smells like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Seems like the only risky interaction was with the police officers issuing citations. I think those who got tickets should sue the city for potentially exposing them to a deadly virus.

Gordon, whose been a member of the church for 23 years, said he thought the congregation was doing the right thing by coming to the church and staying in their cars with the windows rolled up. “The preacher is in the church at the pulpit and we are streaming the service live as well,” Gordon said. “But a lot of our membership is elderly and doesn’t have access (to technology needed to stream the service).” Gordon, who is also a representative for the Washington County Board of Supervisors, was in the parking lot Wednesday night and both he and his wife were issued $500 tickets. “The police were respectful and just doing their job,” Gordon said. “They asked us to leave first and those who stayed got a ticket.”
I fail to see how that could possibly be a threat to anyone catching a virus if everyone is in their vehicles listening to the radio. A bit of an overreach if you ask me. The point isn’t to keep people from going to church, but to keep people from spreading the virus. How does sitting in a vehicle listening to a sermon on the radio spread a virus? Now, if they’re not doing that, it’s a different thing, but if that’s all they’re doing, then that’s just stupid.

I’d rather stay home but...
They’re going to give people the virus by what means sitting in the car with the windows up?
They’re far more dangerous going to grocery stores or Lowe’s.
Also, brilliant move. People sealed in their cars are ticketed by cops who make them open their windows and handle personal items.
I’ve been amazed by the inner Karen coming out in a lot of people. Common sense out the window when it comes to something like the example in the OP. Measures need to be taken but not that extreme. Or like in Michigan where you can’t simply go to another residence you own.

You have to love the nanny state. If you want to go to a church full of ebola carrying patrons that should be YOUR choice. Nowhere in the first amendment does it state "all these things are null and void in case of a virus".
The first amendment doesn’t state this but there is precedent for this. The Supreme Court has declared that in order to contain an epidemic certain rights (such as the right to assembly) can be curtailed by the state. There are laws allowing the federal government to do these things too.
quote:
“The Constitution,” Justice John Marshall Harlanwrote for a 7-2 majority, “does not import an absolute right in each person to be, at all times and in all circumstances, wholly freed from restraint.” Instead, “a community has the right to protect itself against an epidemic.” Its members “may at times, under the pressure of great dangers, be subjected to such restraint, to be enforced by reasonable regulations, as the safety of the general public may demand.”
quote:
The federal government has the authority to order regional or nationwide containment and quarantine measures. The Public Health Service Act enables the surgeon general, with the approval of the secretary of health and human services, “to make and enforce such regulations as . . . are necessary to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of communicable diseases.”
