I'll get flack for this, but Birmingham and surrounding areas such as Mountain Brook and Hoover are fantastic places to work and raise a family.

Go West. Quality of life is much better.

I second some of the other posters here. Find a place where your career is in demand first. My wife and I are considering relocating to the Knoxville or Chattanooga area in a few years. I prefer medium sized cities, the hills and mountains and more seasonal weather.

Mountain Brook if you're rich. Sorry but I think Hoover is one of the worst places to live. The epitome of cultureless American suburb.
Birmingham is on the rise though. The Edgewood neighborhood of Homewood is incredible. Vestavia is nice if you like wooded neighborhoods with a great school system. If you don't have kids, Crestline Park and Avondale are becoming nice.

If you want a better place to live, you should probably look outside the South.

Bend, Oregon is better than Boulder.

I've never been there(would love to visit though one day). My husband spent a week there with a friend mountain biking and touring the breweries there. He talks about that place like it is paradise there
Is Bend that awesome?

I like Tuscaloosa, built a house near the lake. North side, Northridge schools are decent if you select the Northport area.
Decent restaurant and shopping selection and it doesn't take a hour to get across town.
Went through the recession without as much impact as a lot of the country too.

If I wanted to relocate, I would look to the state of Tennessee.
If you're wanting to stay in the South, Tennessee will be hard to beat and I'd put the Davidson/Williamson/Wilson Counties among the best to live and raise a family.

If you like sun, it's great. High desert, not hot though, access to mountains. The downside is that its being run over by ex Californians.
Redmond, OR just north is the new Bend.
