I doubt they will ever go to a "scan with your personal phone, check out on your phone, and leave" model.

Pretty sure they have AI-enabled cameras at the checkouts that are making sure that people are scanning all of their items. When I checkout at Sam's they don't even stop me on my way out

My mom has a Costco membership and I use it in order to get the bulgogi

Sam's has Scan 'n Go checkout, Costco doesn't. IMO, Sam's wins...

The best CostCo can do right now is have their employee scan everything in your cart while you wait to get to the cashier.

What? I scan all my stuff at Costco at the self checkout (unless I have alcohol).

And Scan and Go is coming to Costco eventually. They are still testing it in some stores and the customer experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

Costco over pilot tests everything they do so it takes a long time for them to roll stuff out because they want it to be perfect/the best

Is the sale over or something?

I just joined Sam's for the first time because they were doing a $15/year sale. I bought it like 5 days ago.

That's not sams model either. They don't just take your word on it.

I like Costco, but checking out is the worst retail experience.

Two days ago there was an article that said shrinkage was too much and Costco was abandoning the approach. I’m on my phone but will look for it and link.

Only about 30 of the ~650 US stores have scan and go as it’s a pilot only program and they have been running the pilot for less than a year.

Ok. Define scan and go for me.

What I'm thinking is when the Costco employee scans my card and then scans all of my items. When I get to the front, they scan my card again and I'm ready to pay

If that is scan and pay, I've been doing it at Costco for about a year.

I didn’t consider this to be new technology and it’s not what I’m talking about. Self-checkout at a register gets backed up all the time.

Eh, it was $15. That's a beer and a tip. I'm not losing sleep over the value.

FWIW, we canceled Costco for the same reason Sam's will probably just be a one-year thing: too far, requires travel on the worst roads in BR traffic wise, and not really something we need for our household of 2.

But, $15. I'll give it a shot.

There's a lot of confusion on this probably because of what we both have experienced. CostCo has, on occasion, had someone pre-scanning items in people's carts and once they get to the cashier they can you CostCo card and you pay. This "new" system appears to have dedicated employee scanners whose entire purpose is to pre-scan carts before you go to these "express checkout" kiosks to scan your ID and pay. So, it's the same concept, but on steroids.

I could not find the article I read about shrinkage and abandoning whatever process they were discussing, but found new articles about this expanded method. So, they're "piloting" these dedicated employee scanners and kiosks, but they've been doing this in practice for a very long time.

Scan and Go is you open the app. Scan the items while you are in the aisle. Then put them in your cart. Press pay. And walk out the door. You never go to a register.

Your only interaction with an employee is at the door as they check your cart.

Costco has something similar.

You buy a membership for 60 dollars and get coupon for 45 dollars.

I have been toying with trying Costco, but my nearest Costco is in New Orleans. I don’t live on the Northshore and the Houma Sam’s is close enough. Might was 15 dollars to try it for a year, but Costco ought to really consider putting one in the Bayou Region aka Houma.

Came here to say this. Parking the car takes longer than checking out. Scan & Go and the cart scanners makes it really easy.
Wife (no pics) likes the Asian products at Costco though and their wine selection is better imo.
I had memberships to both, but I gave up the Costco for two reasons. The boss lets me buy office supplies with my corporate card and it's AMEX. Costco doesn't take AMEX, and Sam's gives me Sam's cash on my membership for all purchases. Secondly, SCAN AND GO! Like you said, it takes almost as long to park, than it does to get the shite I need and back to the car.

Another added plus, their prime beef is some of the best I've ever had. $25+/- for two very marbled strips with extreme tenderness and flavor, is a reason I go there weekly. Saturday or Sunday is steak night at my house, and I can't find better regardless of the price.
