Not sure what a prison sentence would solve in this case. Unless he is a sociopath the rest of his life is a living hell.

Incredibly stupid by him to do that but I’m sure he will endure enough mental anguish to last ten lifetimes. The chain reaction of a tragedy like this can destroy an entire family. Divorce, alcoholism, drug abuse, etc are all very real possibilities after a tragedy like this.
