It's a CYA "compromise". Nothing more. Nothing less.
The government officials know they can't keep their towns, cities, states in lock down in perpetuity and they have to open up society/the economy. BUT, by mandating people have to wear masks as part of the "agreement" to end the lockdown, they can transfer blame to the citizens if they choose to disobey the mask mandate.
Basically the thought from their perspective is: "We gave you what you wanted and opened up society, but told you you had to wear a mask. If you refused to do so and got sick/died don't blame us"

I am afraid that mask isn't protecting any one. In fact, it may give a false sense of security and be worse.

A vented N95 mask is actually an EffYewww to those around you. It protects the wearer and produces a directed stream of Corona to those around you.

The problem I have is it gives all the Karens a reason to bitch.
Someone who has already had it can no longer spread it, but everyone is going to treat them differently because they don't have a mask. Are we going to require people without a mask to show their papers proving they already had Covid?
I remember reading back in history class about people being forced to show their papers. Is that where we are going?

When Destroya said the NOPD was going to be pulling over people for not wearing masks, my first thought was "Show me your papers".
I'm not in support of arresting or ticketing those who don't wear them.
My point, shown by the responses, is that when you ask people to take a measure to protect others, most people will say FU, I don't care about others.
This thread has gone exactly as I assumed it would, and shows a lot about how we think about others in 2020.
