RA is horrible as well, I have both. Cut out the red meat, beer, shellfish, some veggies and you should be good to go

Gout is very painful, it's a pulsating pain, and it's magnified because it's in your feet, so you feel it with every move. Anti inflammatories help a lot.

I used to get kidney stones and totally changed things up. Got rid of Dr. Pepper and now just drink a boatload of water and haven't had one since thankfully.

This!!! Never had a kidney stone but have had gout and every flare up was caused by being slightly dehydrated.

I drink a lot. Did the test where you collect all your pee for the day. Just watch my calcium intake.

You should join the Costco thread, I’ve seen a lot of people like you in Costcos riding those cool electric carts

gout attack if I was forced to choose because you can elevate your foot and chill on the couch and be comfortable as long as nothing touches your foot.

It may be a progression thing, but mine were a different experience. I would take a few ibuprophen and elevate to relieve the pain my first few years i dealt with gout. The last few years, NOTHING helped unless i went to urgent care. Allopurinol has left me symptom free the last two years. However... my bloodwork revealed that i have chronic kidney failure (not nearly as bad as acute). My doctor blames my dependence on ibuprophen for the kidney damage. I asked if the scar tissue from elevated uric acid contributed and he didn't seem convinced. idk

Gout is incredibly painful. I lost about 10lbs and haven't had a gout attack in about 15 years, knock on wood. Lose some weight and see what happens, YMMV.

I started getting gout in my 40s when I would drink alcohol. I'm not overweight at all and I'm in very good shape for being 50. It runs in my family as my dad, brother and others in my family have all had it. We are all now on allopurinol and it's a game changer.

I don't hardly drink alcohol anymore, just very occasionally and with the allopurinol, I haven't had an outbreak in years.

Haven’t ever had either but working around folks who have had one/other/both, the kidney stones seemed to be the more painful and debilitating.

Gout is pret’ near preventable for most folks.

Hope you find relief and a long term solution that doesn’t include sawing off your left big toe, Sgt Hulka.

Gout vs Kidney Stones,..

Gout is an annoying but not debilitating pain, at least not for me. Also, it last 2, maybe 3 days tops.

During a kidney stone episode, the agony is outrageous for hours. And this can go on every few days for up to 4 weeks before you pass it.

That has nothing to do with it sometimes - my word - I’ve had 20 and I have drank nothing but water for 10 years. You are an idiot on this subject.

The 3 worst pains I've ever had in my life are 1 cluster headache 2 kidney stones 3 gout. Haven't had one of those headaches in 40 + years. They still can't figure out exactly what caused the headaches. Kidney stones were a close 2nd, almost passed out from one til it moved. Usually would get gout in my whole foot as opposed to the big toe. Had the joint replaced because of arthritis so no nerves there.

I have had both, and I agree with your assessment. Kidney stones will have you writhing in pain for a week.

That stuff will clean out your guts like that stuff you take before a colonoscopy if you take too much. Awful.

Stop eating refined sugar. Stop eating carbohydrates.

It really is as simple as that. It isn't hard. Don't hit yourself in the head with a hammer level of easy.

Or just enjoy the pain as so many Americans do. OOOHHH I have gout! You have inflammation because of refined sugar dipshits.

Also, gout and kidney stones are related, as uric acid can also form kidney stones.

Yep, I can attest to that. I have had over 20 kidney stones over the years and had them diagnosed in a lab to find out it was uric acid based.

Due to the frequency of my having them, I've taken one daily tablet of Allopurinol for a few years now and have not had any real problems with them.

A friend of mine who has an occasional bout with gout also takes Allopurinol to prevent his outbreaks.

Kidneys stones are calcium deposits. They tend to be hereditary.

Gout attacks are definitely triggered by food/drink. Particularly two of my favorites- beer and crawfish.

Not all kidney stones are caused by drinking soft drinks.
We do not drink soft drinks at all. We only drink plain water and water with fresh squeezed lemon.

I and other family members are prone to Calcium Oxalate stones. Foods high in Oxalates:
Almonds, spinach, blueberries, kale, black tea, beets, nuts, chocolate, etc..
Unfortunately all very healthy foods.

It's important that we eat some form of calcium (cheese, etc..) along with foods high in Oxalates.

Sure, if you are putting refined sugar into your body. 10 years ago I could eat a dozen shrimp and gout would cripple me. Today I could eat a dozen pounds of shrimp with zero effects. You don't need drugs to fix this. We were not designed this way.
