Yes I have. They were burrowed in the loose dirt inside the barn. I can think of twice for sure it happened

If a red wasp is a 4, I can handle a 5. But I wouldn’t want to for 300 minutes.

Find yourself one of these first.

A cicada killer:

I think it’s fairly hard to get stung by a cicada killer. Supposedly they’re actually quite docile.

(I wouldn’t know for sure because every time I see one in my carport I either GTFO or empty half a can of Raid. frick that.)

Schmidt is one of those dudes that you just want to meet. I’ve watched some of the videos of him getting stung and describing the pain.

He recently died, of natural causes. Just a legend to science.

This was only an hour at most of intense, radiating pain

The initial sting was brutal though

It might as well have been 1,000 on the day I jumped up to swing on my grandmother's clothesline pole. One popped me before I knew and I started screaming. My grandma grabbed me up with the quickness, drug me in the house, and slathered my arm down with a pasty mixture of snuff and water. I swear I smelled like Redman for a week.

My old grandpa used to call them an elephant ant. Myself it’s a cow ant.

They are. They aren't interested in stinging you in the least.

No sense in that, usually. They won't bother you. I followed the one in the pic across the yard for probably 10 minutes watching and taking pics. It never even acknowledged me. I found its nest/tunnel, and am hoping the larvae make it until Spring. I saw this one drag two different cicadas to the tunnel.

Idk maybe your pain tolerance is way more than mine

We would’ve had to bring my kid to the ER that much I know for sure

A fifth of Jack Daniel’s would’ve helped things

Is the second wasp a different species from the first one that parasitises the caterpillar?

Yep. Entirely different species that targets the original wasp.

I looked twice and was surprised not to see the asp (flannel moth). Little bastards.

The better way to put it is that they don't seek out humans and rarely even sting in defense. It is usually a case of complete random and accidental contact like the OP's case.

well sure, but i was explaining it from the perspective of when my Dad introduced me to “Cow Ants” as a child.

One got me on the back of my hand a few years ago.

10 minutes after the sting with zero relief, I drove my arse back to the office and injected myself with a bunch of lidocaine.

Those little bastards hurt.
