That's why you have to lowball anything Pig in a poke, for unforeseen issues.

I get it. But you would think a decent human being would realize that I got screwed over in this and agree to return the money for the machine. It's not like this guy was just found on a craigslist add. I don't personally know the guy, but he was an acquaintance of someone I knew. Felt there would be a level of trust there, but that's where I messed up I guess.
that guy is is grade A pos but he doesn’t owe you anything

Good to know. Kick the OP that $800 to make him whole. Doesn't sound like $800 is a hardship for you.

I don't think OP said he owes him, and, true, he doesn't. Money has changed hands - in cash - and possession is 9/10 of the law. He just said what would be the decent thing to do. The seller knew he was being a dirt bag.

Maybe your mechanic who you hired to clean your carb is trying to frick you and upsell you a motor you don't really need. Tell him to prove the motor is blown.

Bring it back and leave it in his front yard.

Then he would have neither $800 nor a lawnmower that doesn't work.

It's being brought to a second mechanic today.

What sucks is he got you saying it was an easy fix when it was the motor. Of course he knew. No way anyone buys it if he says his motor is out.

Find out what it will cost you to examine exact issue and fix motor.

That mower is alittle over 3k. A new briggs and stratton 20hp v twin engine is around 900. If u have the money to fix or buy new motor and chaulk it to always send a mechanic to check something used and youll have a new motor. Im sure the look of it was deceiving too. It probably looked nice. Dig deeper into motor. It may be fixable
Also ask your mechanic if you need a new one, is another 20hp motor cheaper than the one that goes on it. Many mower mechs have good used motors already to switch out and a good price. That 20hp briggs is prolly about 350 used.

Or do like me and bring the mower back to his house and throw it on his lawn. Go to lowes, get a lowes card, buy a new husvarna. I bought mine(husqvarna zero turn) for 3k. Paid it off in 5 months. Nothing like brand new. Good luck.

I'm late to this thread, but just wanted to say that grown men who use "lol" in text conversations make me cringe harder than most other things.

Possession is 9/10 of rhe law. And now the seller possesses 10/10 of your payment. And you possess a POS lump of shite.

First mistake.

quote:

Says the machine won't start because the carbeurator needs to be cleaned, but he has never changed one before.

2nd mistake

quote:

So I send someone out that knows way more about lawn mowers than me to pick it up if all is well. Everything the guy says about what he had done to it checks out.

3rd mistake.

quote:

So I purchased the lawn mower.

Your final mistake.

Lots of good lessons to be learned here, but you’ve got no leg to stand on. You’re just screwed. Take it to another mechanic and see what they can do for you.

If it was only going to cost $100 to fix it, did you never wonder why the owner wasn’t going that route himself?

Bingo. and then sell the mower for $1400 instead of $800.

Unreal the amount of broke down shite being sold on the marketplace advertising simple fixes. I just didn't think anyone was actually buying it.

Yeah, that sucks, but if you don't understand any of it, carburetor sounds complicated. It was for me until I actually tried doing it. Not near as bad as my mind made it out to be.
