Cottonmouths will stand their ground, but as said in prior post, very rarely charge. I was walking through my garage a couple weeks back and noticed one sitting in plain site out in the open. Tried getting it in a Rubbermaid storage container using a couple of paddles, but he wasn't having any of that. Not once did he move in my direction, or any direction for that matter.

Just figured that someone with the (alleged) snake expertise to be able to positively, without a doubt, identify a cottonmouth from a water snake would certainly know what to do in a semi-precarious situation as the one you described.

Does it take expertise in herpetology to be able to identify two different types of snakes at close distance that are native to my area???

I assumed that the best thing to do would be to wack them with a paddle, and appears that I was correct.

I generally do not carry a gun when I am canoeing, no.

With how warm it is and knowing all kinds of critters, especially snakes and alligators, are out, it would be smart to carry a little .22 or something to deal with those issues.

The only time a cottonmouth will appear to charge you is if you are blocking the path of his escape. It's not aggressive behavior, but defensive behavior.

I dont doubt that the snake swam towards you, but it wasnt to swim towards you to try and bite you. You were just in the path of where it was trying to go.

Not saying that you were promoting this myth, but when people talk about how water moccasins will chase you around the beach I always chuckle

Water Mocassins jump less than white men. In fact they can’t jump at all. Fact.

I remember going tubing years ago and this loud chick on the bus kept saying snakes can't bite when in water.

I just reminded her...... they eat fish.

Did you call the credit card company? I'm sure that was a doozy, explaining those charges.

I did. Luckily it was Chase Bank, and they understood.

You're going to have several tell you that Cottonmouths aren't aggressive, won't chase humans, it's a myth, etc.

bullshite.

I've had them come after me several times, once nearly emptying my pistol on one as it stalked the boat I was in, for over 100 yards. The fricker just kept coming, until I finally smoked him.

It seems like the people that believe that its 100 percent fact that they aren't aggressive towards humans act as if they have some kind of chip on their shoulder towards the people who think that they might be aggressive towards humans. Pretty strange tbh..

Yep, not sure what that's all about, but it seems so. I know what I've had happen to me. I can't say what would have happened had the snakes gotten close to me, but I'm not interested in finding out. My buddy and I were crappie fishing in a lake that was about 300 yards wide, and a couple of miles long. We were about 30 feet off the bank when the snake took to water. I told my friend we had one after us, and he kicked on the trolling motor. I started shooting at the bastard when we were about to the middle of the lake, and took a jog to the left, and the damn thing followed. We went another 20-25 yards, and jogged back to the right, and the snake did too. By the time I popped him, we were close enough to the other bank to start dabbing minnows on that side.

There is no other explanation than the snake was after us. Hell, I was shooting a .40 Glock at the thing, and not missing by much, but the snake kept coming. Id be glad to entertain any plausible explanation by the "it's a myth" down voters.

Notice ol Orry in the video is messing with a small, Texas cottonmouth.

I would love to see him act so calm around the mean azz water moc's in Alabama that are twice the size of the one in his video.

Lake Eufaula (not far from Martin) has some that would have him rethinking his beliefs on them being non-aggressive.Spent most of my teens and early 20's on this lake and I can tell you for a fact that their are some water moc's that have the disposition of a nest of yellowjackets on a humid, 100 deg July afternoon. Mean mothers, to say the least

Anybody that doesnt think a moccasin will "charge" is mistaken.

#13 at Shenandoah CC years ago I hit my ball right to the waters edge left of the fairway. As I reached to move the ball (yeah, I'm a cheater) so I wasn't standing in the water, a moccasin came out the weeds like a fricking missle. Chased me at least 15 or 20 feet. No idea how I didnt get bit. My dad was sitting in the golf cart behind me just laughing.

Those things are super aggressive and will definitely charge you.

I've had some chase, some run away, and a couple times had them following to catch the critters (like frogs and big grasshoppers) my walking through tall grasses stirred up.

The people who completely write off the possibility of a venomous snake being aggressive are the same ones that don't like to see snakes needlessly killed.

I hate when ignorant people kill all snakes, sometimes even venomous ones, but I have seen cottonmouths do exactly what you described.

On the water in a boat, had a big female assume strike position and not back down when left alone.
