Baytown is awesome .

That smell in the air is not just the smell of Exxon and Pasadena wafting across the ship channel, it is also the scent of meth cooking from abandoned dwellings. And every month is meth cooking season.

Resist the temptation to minimize the value of picking a neighborhood with good schools. Good schools = neighbors more likely to care about education, good decision making in the household, and homes more likely to appreciate in value. Find one of those with homes that have never flooded and you hit the jackpot. There is a lot to choose from.

My buddies who live in Kingwood (a very strong LSU presence) also enjoy that it has 2 major golf courses that were used for the filming of Costner’s Tin Cup.

I would recommend driving through a few locations. The first time a Louisiana refugee makes that tree lined drive down Kingwood Dr passing waterways, golf courses, with pedestrian tunnels that go under the streets for kids walking to school, joggers, and cyclists is pretty eye opening since Louisiana has NOTHING like it.

Seriously, I would consider the Clear Lake or Seabrook area.
Getting across the bridge from there will be fighting the truck traffic in/out of the ship channel area there.

People describing that part of Texas as anything other than terrible is blowing my mind. East Houston / Baytown is the worst part of Houston and Houston is the worst part of Texas. I've spent more time than I care to remember in that area, and you couldn't pay me to go back there.

You sound like a pure bundle of joy. Couldn’t simply choose to go about your day without coming here?

Been all over Texas. The thought that Houston is way below the rest of the state is laughable. There’s shitty parts everywhere and there’s nice parts everywhere. It’s all the same. Same chains. Same cookie cutter homes. Same Mexican restaurants.

It’s about the dollar. That’s why we’re all here.

I am in the Mont Belvieu area. Moved there 5 years ago mostly because of the school district….also avoids Houston traffic.

I grew up in Houston, and I've moved back to Houston twice. I know there are jobs there, which is obviously why people move there. But it's not all the same. Other than jobs and Mexican food, Houston really has no redeeming qualities. It's hot, flat, concrete, and way too much culture.

If you like corporate chain restaurants, strip malls and big-arse McMansion suburbs where there’s nothing to do besides commuting to work and coming home, Houston is for you.

It’s not that bad on 146 now that they extended the freeway. It’s 5 pm and the traffic map is green all the way from Baytown to FM518 before the freeway ends at 96.

I have a house in Mont Belvieu. They're building left and right there. When I moved there back in 2021, it had 6,500 people. Now, it's nearly 12,000. They're looking for it to be around 30,000 over the next 4.5 years. It's expensive, but people are buying because of the school district.

If you're not wanting to buy anything right now, there are some newer, nice apartments on the south side of I-10 that are still zoned to Barbers Hill ISD.

Anyway, there are plenty of Louisiana BAWs in the area with a lot of good people from other parts of Texas and the country.

I had a place in the Energy Corridor in West Houston, and I had a place in Greater Katy after that. Mont Belvieu was more my speed and what I was used to without the traffic. You can get up and down 146 with ease.

When I was a kid in the 60s our family went there to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins. It was cool that they had kids the same age as each of us 3 kids so that made things less complicated.

I remember going to the beach and my first time in the ocean with waves and that was cool. But there was a strong smell, which wound up being oil, that was always there.

I asked my cousin what is that smell? He said, what smell?….haha

That’s all I got right now….

Get into an apartment first until you learn the lay of the land (flooding) and do a lot or riding on your time off to find where you want to live permanently. Good Luck.
