10^25 years, now <5 minutes. frick, I'm going to need to start using some sort of lengthy, 1000 character password, now.

It can't crack cryptography yet. And there are already quantum resistant algorithms in existence like CRYSTALS-Kyber (which was NIST approved). We already have the algorithms, but the hard part will be switching everyone over. It will take years.

They don't. It's marketing

Was reading a while back about how quantum computer will break passwords in seconds. (Today’s computers would take 100+ years to crack a 23 digit random password.)

Admittedly dont know much about blockchain and that stuff but isn’t crypto, like BTC, basically just a very long random password?

“Passwords” won’t be character-based, they’ll be some combination of biometric and genetic verification.

It's likely something that the answer is known only due to time making it impossible.

Something like: simulate every possible combination and order of a deck of 52 cards. I realize this would take a hell of a lot longer than 10 septillion years, but as an example

Yes, but it won't be cracking the actual password. It will be cracking the hash algorithm that protects your password (but the result is the same).

No. It would take me a few paragraphs just to give a basic overview on how the crypto algorithms work.

That won't save you either because all of that data is stored somewhere and it is protected by hash algorithms. If you can find an inherent flaw in the hash algorithm, you have the keys to the kingdom no matter if its protecting a password, a fingerprint, or whatever.

So, it works really fast by using something called qubits and can solve an equation exceptionally fast, but because the qubits are processed so fast the system is prone to errors.

I'm of the thought that if it's prone to errors then the speed at which it makes an error isn't really something to brag about. Unless it arrives at the correct conclusion then it really hasn't performed its task.

The system is also prone to human thought interference. The simple act of humans being to close to it changes the results.

It’s wonky and they spend most of the development money shielding the thing from the interference of people tending to it and setting up the individual runs.

I’m buying one when they become available and I’ll beat the living shite out of the stock market. I’ll make Nancy Pelosi look like a novice.

Google announced it themselves.

It’s also years and years away from practical applications.

Large problems are easy to conceive. The problem is that the number of possible solutions is large.

They know how many possible solutions exist, and they know how many solutions per second can be tested. It’s just math.

But what if it guesses right on the first try? Or halfway through? It’s like if I said it would take you 52 tries to flip over a queen of hearts in a shuffled deck.
