So, did 1/2 of a fitting yesterday. The machine was glitchy, so I had to swing WAY more times than I should have and got tired. Well, that plus inconsistent swings. Anyway, I brought the two best clubs I've ever hit and my best with those were so close in everything. Ball speed, launch, spin, carry total distance-everything. The guy sets up a TM M1 for me and even though I never nutted one, I gained something like 20 in carry and 30 overall. While I liked the look of the smaller head version, I never could find the center on that one. I think he had me in too stiff of shaft because of swing speed alone and I was catching it high and on the toe. I always do better in softer flexes with driver.

Anyway, how important is shaft during these deals? Can I just find a head that's clearly superior, buy the stock one, then experiment with aftermarket from eBay? Or do I keep hitting at the shop until I find THE one?

With that kind of increase, do I even worry about Cally, Cobra etc?

Shaft is every bit as important as head, but if you really had that kind of gain, I would stick with that u less your launch or spin numbers are way off of optimal

Each brand's best driver is so close in performance that it's going to be about what you like looking at and what feels good to you (and your wallet).

Like others have said, the shaft is vital, more so than the head.

My Golf Spy just released their 2016 Driver Test. Worth giving it a look.

Almost every driver head is the same these days. Find one you like the look of and get fitted for the shaft.

It was all over the place. Started in low 90s while I warmed up. Peaked at 101. Fell beck to low-mid 90s so we called it a day. I am 49, out of shape, and play about 4 times per year. Swing really degraded after a certain point, and I was sweating like a fat millennial.

I have the M1 driver but I do not play it much. It's a low spin head and it's tough to find the right shaft for it. The stock shaft is garbage, at least for My swing. You need at least 105-110 AS to hit it well. My SS is 117-119 but it just feels dead coming off the face. I've tried no less than 10 different shafts and the best I've found is the Project X 6.0. I can play it but I just don't like the feel. The M2 head is much better IMO.
I've bought a new driver every year the past 5-10yrs just to see if the new technology is better than my gamer. I've been playing the same driver that I bought in 2002. Adams Redline Ti 460. It's the hottest driver I've ever hit. It still is 14yrs later. You can find them on eBay for $75. Get it with the stock Fujikura shaft.
My latest acquisition is giving it a run. The Bombtech Grenade driver with the stock Matrix shaft. It's ugly but it performs well. You should try it.
Whatever driver/shaft combo gets you the best launch angle and spin combo for your swing speed along with a look and feel that you like is what you should go with.

I'm actually getting fitted for a new driver today as well. I'll probably go with the new titleist or whatever James recommends.

I've been pretty loyal to them in the past, but seems like they have been behind in all the testing I've seen lately on drivers.

I would argue that the shaft is more important than the head. As one poster said, the heads are all about the same (as far as performance goes). I will say that some head shapes and designs can cause a ball to spin more or less which can greatly affect your overall distance.

Now we come to the shaft - It's all about which one is best for you. That's really what a fitting should be about. Basically find a head that you like (ie looks good, feels good and sounds good), then find the right shaft. Don't get hung up on price though. Just because a shaft is $380 doesn't mean it's going to cause a dramatic change in distance. You're going to have to find the correct specs for you.

Grip is often an overlooked aspect of a fitting. I know those TaylorMade clubs come with a pretty small grip which could explain why you were catching it on the toe. Maybe hitting some snap hooks? Just finding the correct grip size could help you start hitting the ball more solidly.

Shaft is more important. Find the right ball flight, spin, and etc. try Ping G series. I've played Taylor made drivers up until 2 year ago and find Ping more forgiving

yeah, I used to be a shaft ho in my younger days. Buying and reshafting often. Oh the days of the Micro 58. Anyway, I am asking about the fitting process only as it pertains to finding the right head.

All went left, yes. I was tired and the shaft was a true S which always makes me force the issue.

Finding the right TM M1 shaft. This might help.

If your pulling it left, the shaft is too stiff

The guy said i was hitting the Kuro Kage best. I like where it's placed on that chart.

Yup. I referenced this chart when buying shafts. I really like the UST Elements Chrome shaft in the M1 head but I didn't like the ball flight in that head compared to the Project X.
