Going to New York in January... Need hotel recs

I am planning to take a weekend trip to New York in January. I want to stay around Times Square/Central Park area. I have been looking on groupon so far and see some decent deals. What are some decent places to stay? Of course I won't be in the room much, so it doesn't have to be some exquisite hotel. Also, where is a good place to have drinks at night that are safe and able to get in?
I am looking at the Tryp by Wyndam in Times Square.

We stayed at the Wellington on 7th Ave. It's between Central Park and Times Sq. There's also a subway station right when you step outside the door. I'm sure there are fancier, more expensive places but this suited our needs when we went 8 yrs ago.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn I think on 5th? It was like four blocks go Time Square and walkable to Central Park. Would stay again if I went. Everything on that side was very walkable.

Just find a decent place in the area, you will never be in your room in NYC except to sleep.

In NYC you can get anywhere my subway, bus, taxi, etc. and it's not like taking CATS around BR. Meaning if there's a hotel that's $200/night cheaper downtown than midtown just book it. Hope you enjoy it, I'll be there on Sunday

On groupon, the Tryp is $119 a night. It is on W 48 between 7th & 8th Ave. how would this one be?

Hotel St Regis.
Classic style, great location, excellent bar. Only place to stay, IMO.

Just find someone's new Prius. Meet up with a bunch of homeless dudes and have yourself a Soup Kitchen.

You may want a second opinion from a NYC native but that sounds like a great price for nyc in the right area you're looking for. The reviews online for the tryp look pretty good too, you're 2-3 blocks away from the 1, C, E, N, Q, R subway lines, in between central park and times square, away from the crowds.
Edit: Times square is in the area of 42-46 and 7th so it's not far

I wouldn't stay in Times Square. Find a hotel in a more residential area, like Soho, or Tribeca. There will be better things to walk to from your hotel and the area won't be packed with tourists.

We stayed in the Marriot Marquis in Times Square. I would not stay in Times Square again. Too many people and you are basically hit up by every peddler trying to sell something each time you step out the door. Had a much more enjoyable time once we got a few blocks out of that hell hole. I don't know where a good place to stay would be, but I'd look other places. Only good thing about staying there was getting to watch a Broadway Show at night and be 5 minutes from your room when it's done.

It's honestly been a super long time since I stayed in a NYC hotel, so can't help you there.
Times square is just ok if you're a tourist. There's going to be mobs of people regardless of the time so be careful. Times Square was rated the most likely place to be robbed in the city, so there's also that. Just think of it like walking around the French Quarter. Also if you get too far west (past 7th avenue) you start to get into Port Authority region- it essentially doubles as a homeless shelter at night, so be wary.
If I were you I would stay downtown closer to the Financial District. There's no shortage of good restaurants down there and it'll be less crowded at night and on the weekends. I did stay at the Marriott Downtown next to WTC before it was renovated in 2009, it had some nice views. From the financial district to just about everywhere you'd want to go is an easy sub way trip. There's an insane amount of lines in the vicinity.

As a NYC resident, I would highly suggest avoiding Times Square as it is a mad house. I would highly recommend staying at either The Standard hotels, located in Meatpacking or East Village. The Meatpacking location has a terrific biergarten attached with a much more laid back vibe than the hectic traffic of Times Square

Anyone familiar with the upper west side between 79th and 81st by the American Museum of Natural History? Looking at a VRBO around here.

There's a shake shack right next to the AMNH, good times. Honestly I wouldn't mind staying there, you'll have good subway access going up and down the island. The only problem would be getting to Queens, which I doubt you'll do anyway.
It's probably a 10-15 min subway ride on the 1/B/C, although the 1 train is local so keep that in mind.
Subway pro tip- use Google maps transit feature to figure out which subway to take, and pay attention to direction.
Eta-Lincoln Center isn't far away either. Do yourself a favor and go see an opera there.
