Same heat shield but changing the angle to change how much strain is put on the heat shield. At the PC this afternoon they spent some time on it. They've got a 1° margin of error according to Jeff this afternoon.

If there's an angle that puts less strain on the heat shield why are we not always using that angle?
Chance of skipping off the atmosphere altogether?

Orion helium leak no threat to Artemis II reentry, but will require redesign
After leaks on Artemis I and II, Orion’s next flight to the Moon will need new valves.

Less strain on astronauts and cargo. Original profile was to skip the atmosphere 1/2 times to burn off some velocity

Very good article.
To summarize:
- The heat shield material on Orion is Avcoat. Same as used on Apollo. I'm not familiar with it but its composition apparently includes some gases. Think really small pockets of gases. Maybe even cellular level. FTR, it may not be gases at RT, but later gassifies at high temps.
- Avcoat is an ablator. It dissipates heat by eroding away in small flecks, i.e., charring.
- Art1 used a groovy skip maneuver on reentry that created a different heating profile.
- The Art1 reentry profile frustrated charring and the natural flecks of Avcoat, but still allowed enough heating that the latent 'gas' erupted. So instead of ablating away in small flecks, it spalled in large chunks.
- The Art2 plan is just good ol' fashioned, smashmouth reentry. I think the heat shield will be fine and will have one beautiful char layer when it splashes down.
FYI, I think Art2 will set another record as they will be flying faster during reentry than any man has flown before.

quote:This is correct. The NASA feed narrator mentioned it tonight. On their PAO with the politicians, Koch mentioned that they will be pulling roughly the same G load as they did going up. It kind of sucks that our last capsule view of them in space was that political PAO.

Before we all scatter to the OT wind, I wanted to be sure to mention how great nearly everyone has been in this thread. A lot of good information and of course the flat earth/sound stage goofs did provide some humor. I'm in for any A4 FL meetup. In the meantime, after tomorrow night I won't have to listen to my wife bitch about me watching the streams.

She sounds fun. Some of you are in sad relationships.

Cool launch video about 3 miles from LC-39B. Observe how it made the tie-down and tent vibrate.

NASA seems downright giddy about the weather where the capsule will splash down.
They are now under 50,000 miles away from earth and are going over 6,100mph.
ETA: The narrator just commented that they'll be maxing out at 3.9Gs when they hit the atmosphere.

Where can I watch the splashdown live at?
Posted on 4/10/26 at 2:01 pm to RetiredSaintsLsuFan
My guess is that all the television networks will be showing it live. Can probably find it on YouTube as well - just search on Orion Splashdown or similar.

NASA Youtube stream, HBO Max, CNN, Netflix, C-SPAN. (I'm sure there's more but those are off the top of my head.
ETA: Here's the LINK to the NASA stream.

Apollo 17 returned to earth on 12/19/72.
It's been that long since man returned to the earth from the moon.

Man I messed up and started arguing with many of the “FAKE” idiots on social media today. Man it is really scary. I tried to ignore them but they were everywhere today in full force. I try to challenge them to a genuine step by step debate on why they struggle so much to accept this, but I haven’t had one participate yet. It’s usually 2 or 3 very angry responses and they disappear.

Final burn is compete. Seats are being reinstalled. Orange suits are coming out. You've got to figure this is the last time a couple of them go into space (I'm sure Meir not Koch will get the moon landing.)
These 9 days have flown by. I hope the next crew is as likeable as this crew has been.

The only difference is that here were all part of a community...that's been evident multiple times in the past few decades (the saga of Honkus fleeing China at the start of Covid is a big one). Social media is an echo chamber of people wanting to share their opinions but not listen to others.

Just reported it will miss the record for speed on reentry by 130 mph.
Peak speed at 6:54 CDT
