GM trucks losing another fuel economy feature due to chip shortage

LINK

General Motors will begin building some full-size trucks without a key fuel-saving feature next week due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage affecting the industry.

The start/stop function shuts off the engine when the vehicle is not in motion and automatically restarts it when the driver takes their foot off of the Brake. It is common on many internal combustion engine-powered vehicles today.

A GM spokesman told The Detroit Free Press that the change would result in a 1 to 2 mpg drop in the combined fuel economy rating for the trucks and that the price would be reduced by $50.

The change affects certain trim levels of the following 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8-powered models with 10-speed automatic transmissions, including Base, High Country, Denali and AT4:

Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban
GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
Chevrolet Silverado 1500
GMC Sierra 1500

In March, the shortage led GM to remove a cylinder deactivation feature from the 5.3-liter V8 that is also aimed at improving fuel economy by cutting fuel to some cylinders under light loads and said it wouldn't return until the 2022 model year trucks enter production later this year.

So now you can get a truck from them that has neither automatic start/stop or the cylinder deactivation. IMO these unwanted features made the trucks worse and more expensive, so their absence is a good thing.

This- I hate the auto stop on our Atlas. I tried to embrace it, but especially moving into the hottest months of the year, I deactivate it before I put it in gear.

I bought a Toyota because it didn't have those features. Glad to see another carmaker focusing on consumers during this chip shortage rather than heavy handed regulations.

A whole $50 off the price, wow think about what you can do with those savings compared to the 1-2 MPG drop off

Jokes aside, My wives vehicle has this and I turn it off every time I drive it

Good. This is by far the stupidest feature on modern vehicles.

I love the shut off feature.

Seems like you might want to spend the extra $50 to get the truck with the chip since it will save you in the long run with gas consumption over the life of the truck.

If you don’t put on your seat belt it doesn’t engage.

It's part of my pre-trip procedure at this point.

But then you have to factor in the cost of replacing the starter at least 3x in the lifespan of the vehicle since it is being used so much more.

I hate auto stop/start. Thankfully my Sierra has a button I can smack. I've been in some cars where you have to navigate through the touch screen menus to turn that shite off

Is there any available data on this? I have always assumed the manufacturers would have considered this and taken precautions to prevent premature wear...but then again that may be giving them too much credit.

On my vehicle, I pressed the button that disengages the start/ stop feature and jammed a small piece of flat plastic by the side of the button so the button stays depressed. That way, I don't have to keep disengaging it everytime I start the engine.

Yea I do not like the start stop feature. I haven’t figured out how to completely disable it within the menu so I have to keep hitting the stupid button above the radio every time I turn the truck on.

When I had a Silverado I did like the cylinder deactivation a lot.

My understanding is that the starters have seen considerable upgrades to accommodate the auto start/stop. I remember reading about it back when Ford first started adding this to their line.

The auto start/stop “feature” is pretty annoying. Losing cylinder deactivation kind of sucks, though.. that wasn’t nearly as noticeable when driving.

It makes the engine burn oil, IIRC. Mine started doing that around 130,000 miles. Nothing crazy, but more than the other high mileage cars that I had from the same brand (Chevrolet).

On the newer Volvos, you can turn it off and it will remember your settings until you change the car's battery. So if you want it, it's there. If you don't, it's gone.

I like that. Wish other manufacturers would do that.

Yep. I had a rental a while back that had thr start/stop feature and it was really annoying. I suppose you would get used to it, but I never did in just short of two weeks.

The cylinder deactivation feature seems like something that should be standard on almost every vehicle.

Have there ever been any negatives to that found in real-world use? Why don't more manufacturers do this?

Some systems are better than others, and it can be pretty invisible in high-end new stuff.

I drove a basically-new Audi A6 Allroad last week, and with the windows up, literally the only way I knew the engine was shutting down and coming back on was from watching the tachometer. Zero vibration, zero noise, no sensation at all. Pretty cool.
