At a certain point, most people won't own cars in cities. You'll pay a service to send autonomous cars (that will be located everywhere) to take you places, or to schedule you to take you to work, etc, at much cheaper prices than owning a car and paying insurance and maintenance.

But yeah, the Police unions and local gov'ts will fight this sooooooooooooooooooooo hard.

I'm early adopting self driving cars as soon as I feel they are 100% safe. But its gonna have to have a wheel so I can manually drive when I need to.

Also, I will not trust Government motors to be the first. I'll have to wait for Toyotas offering or Google's or anybody's but GM.

There are situations where the driver will need a wheel.

This sort of thing is going to throw law enforcement for a loop. How do you pull over the driver of a car that isnt driven by a person? How can an autonomous car give reasonable suspicion of a crime to a person that isnt driving it? Further, how can you ticket, impound, seize, cars that cant commit a crime?

That will be a big resistance point. Lots of communities will lose significant revenue. Not just police. Think about insurance companies, personal injury attorneys, etc. Even auto dealerships. At some point a lot of people wont own a car. They will choose services like an autonomous Uber to take them around.

I imagine the lobby against this will be quite strong.

FIFY

There is no way in hell that a car w/no steering wheel should be allowed on the road any time in the near future. The tech is nowhere near there and even if it was to not have a wheel in case of some sort of failure or emergency is asinine to the Nth degree.

Not sure what you're laughing at. If all cars are autonomous and the grid is set up to accomodate that, traffic jams would not exist.

However, we are a very long way away from that.

If I were to buy a self driving car from an auto maker in the US market, GM is near last I would do it from behind only Fiat Chrysler.

I don’t trust these idiots to make a REGULAR car that works, let alone a self driving one.

I want this future. I trust an autonomous car more than I trust a driver messing around on his/her phone.

Put a fake wheel in there to make me feel like I have a little control

I don’t.

The software for self driving cars will end up having more bugs than an insectarium in part because it will have to be written in a way to predict the reactions of human drivers on the road around it.

No software test will be able to predict what happens when a human tries something stupid. It’s bad enough in an enterprise system that doesn’t involve a chance of irreparable harm in case of errors. It will be much worse in a case where than can be a body count.

Put some thought into before you laugh. Traffic will evaporate in a true autonomous car society. Cars will communicate with each other, the roads, and know traffic conditions. Trips will be adjusted to maximize roadway traffic patterns. Alternate routes and times of departure will be used more. There shouldn't be anymore wrecks.

Even if your thinking about Baton Rouge and the interstates capacity, Baton Rouges traffic would be a lot smoother if every damn driver wasn't gunning the gas only to slam on the brake pedal after 10 feet. Or if there weren't wrecks that blocked lanes.

At max capacity a roadway would flow smoother if the cars all know what they are doing and control it versus humans controlling it.

In theory there wouldn’t even be a need for traffic controls of any kind. Cars would move fluidly through intersections as they are all communicating with each other. Non-stop driving.

Obviously we are many many many many years from that.

What if you need to stop to use the bathroom, go to the drive thru at a restaurant or Starbucks, I just don’t see how the car can do those types of functions without user input

There will still be controls. There just won't be visible signals. This is actually what I'm working on right now.

I haven’t researched lately, but doesn’t google have millions of miles logged with autonomous cars? There have been wrecks where humans hit the autonomous cars, and I think one where the autonomous car caused a minor accident. The technology is there & seems to work. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I’m excited by the prospect.

I mean, if I can tell Alexa to do a million different things with my voice, I’m sure an autonomous car can be verbally told to go somewhere else or stop at a Starbucks.

Why? Liability would go down markedly for human drivers.

It will be really difficult to get to perfect. I think the question is, if everyone had self driving cars, would there be less fatalities on the road?

This is the driving system that allows me to drive.
LINK

While it isn't self driven, this system allows a vehicle to be driven in non-traditional ways. When the system is installed, the company has to drive the vehicle for 300-400 miles before it can return it to the user to make sure there is nothing at all wrong with the software.

I think the idea that we are close to having self driving cars are exciting...
