re: Glacier NP hikers encounter wildlife fun

You want pants filling bear encounters, check this one out from the Highline Trail in Glacier. This is at a section of the trail that's maybe not more than 3-4 ft wide and as you can see it's virtually straight down to certain death if you slip. We hiked this and I was puckered up just passing other people on there.
This dude encountered a huge grizzly on that sucker with nowhere to go, so he risked his life climbing down onto a small outcropping.
Here's a picture I took from that section on our hike showing what he was trying to scale down for "safety".

Same re: blind link no clicky, but I've been up close and personal with a few griz in glacier and it was awesome. something weird overrides abject fear. it was like a peaceful, "well if this is how i have to go then so be it." i wasn't charged though. They just minded their business.

If you encounter a grizzly, do not run.
Avoid direct eye contact.
Walk away slowly, if the bear is not approaching.
If the bear charges, stand your ground (you cannot outrun it).
Don’t scream or yell. Speak in a soft monotone voice and wave your arms to let the animal know you are human.
If you have pepper spray, prepare to use it.
If the grizzly charges to within 25 feet of where you’re standing, use the spray.
If the animal makes contact, curl up into a ball on your side, or lie flat on your stomach.
Try not to panic; remain as quiet as possible until the attack ends.
While in bear country, be aware that you may encounter a bear at any time.
Be sure the bear has left the area before getting up to seek help

If Unarmed:
Black Bear = Fight Back
Grizzly/ Brown Bear = Play Dead
Otherwise it's Bear Pepper Spray or a 45 cal or bigger handgun. Preferably a pump action shotgun(No Plug) with alternating loads of Double 00 Buckshot and Slugs

A lot of guides in AK carry cut down 12 gauges. The main thing though is not to surprise them and keep good camp discipline so they don't associate you with food. I saw 12 or 13 in the course of a week long backpacking trip and they just ignored me.

It wasn't that trail, but a similar portion on the Grinell Glacier Trail where a few years ago a guy and his daughter were mauled by Grizzly. Both of them had to jump off the cliff to a ledge below to avoid being eaten alive. And the father (after listening to his daughter being attacked) had to make a second leap of faith after the bear climbed down and attacked him again.
Thankfully they survived. You can read, or watch videos, of their terrifying account online. I'm glad I read about that attack after I visited GNP, otherwise I might not have gone. Or I might not have done the Grinell Glacier hike, which is one of the best hikes I have ever done.
