So I am putting in my 2 weeks notice today. Since starting actual "real" professional jobs at age 23 I have never actually had to do this. I was laid off at age 25 and then again in 2015. I feel that I have everything prepared to do it the right way but can't help to feel like I am abandoning my boss. Any advice?

It's your life. Would they feel the same way if your company laid you off? No.

Close out all of your projects and take the rest of the time to burn up vacation days

Do it at the end of the day.
Have your personal stuff gone before you do it.
Copy all your contacts and anything else you may need.
Be prepared to be escorted off the premises immediately.

Yea I agree. But I think it's because I really like everyone there. It's clouding my head. Plus regardless of how I act here I am pretty different in real life. Just makes me feel kinda shitty

You have nothing to feel bad about. If you are taking a new job and/or opportunity that is better for you and your family, then go for it.

That won't happen. Only 6 employees and two will be on vacation next week. They need me to stay the whole 2 weeks. Even though I hope I do wish it would be the last day.

Yeah, id definitely be prepared for them to ask you to leave immediately. Not saying it will happen, but theres a 50/50 chance of it, so just be ready.

I have no other advice to people looking to leave on regular or good terms. I just constantly run scenarios where I get to tell people to screw off and walk out. I'm going to be very prepared if that happens though.

In real life thank and thank him for everything.

No matter how you think the company feels about you be prepared to for today to be your last day, it happens about 60% of the time. Clean out your office, take all personal items, send yourself a list of all contacts, do it at the end of the day, don't burn any bridges, put it all in writing, let your boss, his boss and the HR manager know all at the same time. Good luck in your new endeavors.

Exactly. Be cordial and appreciative for your experience and opportunity. Your boss has probably had to make the same business decision at one time or another to get where he is and will more than likely understand.

Type it up and print it out. Explain that this is an opportunity that is best for you and your family. Thank them for investing in you past number of years and express what a joy it was to work with them. Offer to help out above and beyond the next 2 weeks to assist in the transition.

Walk into your boss' office right before lunch, ask for a minute of his time and hand him your letter. After he reads it, have a discussion and possibly get a free lunch from your soon to be ex boss.

So you're saying there's an opening at your old job.

What type of work does this place do?

TIA, Nado

Yep. I know we all joke about storming out of a job, but I have learned it is never wise to burn bridges. I can understand if there is an extreme circumstance, but try to keep things on the up and up. You never know who knows who and what may come up down the road. Good luck Nado

Write an actual resignation letter if you haven't. Professional cutousey, also a legal document in case something ever comes up about it later.

It sucks, it really does. Thank them for their investment into your professional growth, appreciate your time there. Offer to train, walk ppl through your open projects.

Basically don't be a dick and treat them like you would want to be treated.

Also, if you haven't already accepted the other job, you can allow them a chance to counter offer. I never know how companies will take that tho, like a slap in the face or appreciate you allowing them to counter, as in you want to be there. Some others may gave better advice on that aspect of it. I have had to do this 3 times, and each time no.counrer offer was keeping me. So i never even brought that up prior to accepting new job offer.
