Given the choice would you prefer to work in the Pacific or European WW2 theater?

And what branch of the military / position? For me I think I’d want to be part of a bombing crew and would want to pick the Pacific.

So you killed a bunch of civilians and the Japanese didn’t give a shite

The Soviet invasion freaked them out more than Hiroshima or Nagasaki

European. All day, every day. Because guess what? Germans or Italians will take you prisoner, and treat you relatively well and according to the Geneva convention. With the Japs it was a toss up whether they would shoot you on the spot, or take you prisoner and let you work and starve yourself to death. The Nazis did some truly bad shite, but the Japanese military from the top down were a bunch of inhuman animals.

Very true. I read a book on the Bataan Death March and couldn’t image what those prisoner went through. I’ll take Europe all day.

Europe for a variety of reasons, but primarily because of the length of both campaigns.

From D-Day, June 6, 1944, until Germany surrendered in early May 1945, was less than a year.

The Island battles started in the Pacific in the summer of ‘42, and lasted 3 years until the summer of 1945. The first major battle for Guadalcanal lasted 6 months, and the last on Okinawa was 3 months.

There are exceptions. Bomber crews based in England had incredible casualty rates, and they missions for a couple of years prior to D-Day. The invasion of Sicily and the Italian peninsula was the Summer of ‘43, and some of the heaviest fighting for Americans in Europe occurred in Italy.

But for the average American fighting on the ground, Europe was better than the Hell in the Pacific.

This 100%. I did a school project once where I interviewed a relative of mine that survived the Bataan march. The things he described were horrific and the way they were treated was inhumane to say the least. Wish I still had or could find those cassette tapes

Europe. At least if you got captured the Germans were somewhat humane and respected Americans.

Europe/Army. I’d much rather know for certain I’m on the ground and that I’m facing my enemy, rather than be shot down over seas or have my ship hit and have to worry about becoming shark bait.
