I have one. It’s a nice car but not screwed together well. Lots of interior rattles and squeaks that had to be fixed.
It’s from a Chinese owned company. That may matter to you.
I wouldn’t buy another.

You got the first SPA vehicle, every single part of it was brand new. Now, a few years later, they’ve buttoned things up a bit better.
That said, the passenger side window toggle rattled from the factory (I fixed it)...and since my wife hit a 200lb deer we have one up by the rear view. I’ll get to that one too.

Love my 2018. No issues. Comfortable and plenty of go with the turbo. Safest car on the road, good looking too.
And not a single squeak or rattle

They def were. And I actually do like wagons and have said it on here before, if I were rich my daily driver would be an E63s wagon.

Which year?
I have a 17 T6 ..obviously i really like it or not bought it. Its been deemed "safest production car on the road" (no recorded fatalities in 8 yrs in the US and ...18 yrs or so in England)
What i don't like: the Senus infotainmemt screen doesn't scroll with the selections. If you have 15 favorite stations on XM and 7 show on the screen..if you scroll to the 8th...you still see the original 7. ( not sure if fixed on later models)
The voice command system is bad..neither i nor my wife can get it to function. And and on top of that...it really wants to work so after i have become frustrated and tell it to stop ...it wants to really get me to Luigis Pizza in Fargo ( and I wanted it to call my wife) this is something the sales guy warned about. There is an easy menu button to get to most recent calls though. I have to add a point here...it also has the lost useless feature i have ever seen on a car. If you don't use voice or type in the adress you want to go....you can write it in on the touch screen. If it cant understand my speech...its not understanding my writing and...what about lefties writing ..having to reach
That's all the dislikes!
The acceleration is good even at 4 cyl
The handling is great. Ride smooth. The touch screen is easy to learn. I wish i had the Bower Wilkins sound system ...but the standard is good. My girls like listening to the "Who Dun it" shows on Xm classic. In our van its difficult to make out all the dialog but can in the XC90
The sight lines are great. I have the seat programmed perfectly. It was stiff at first but i like it now
The lane assist is great..ill admit that i looked down the vother day to get something and the car made the correction to keep me im my lane. My girls like that it can drive it self. Though...at times it feels like its grading you ...like you are approaching a line and it corrects you and im like "i wasnt going over..i saw it" overall i do love this system. But it can be thrown for a loop. We have one intersection that goes to three lanes - adding a turn lane and the bike lane. It doesnt know what to do there. Im driving but you cam feel the confusion via the steering wheel. Also high speed (on ramps to interstate) where the turn is increasing in sharpness...it will sometimes correct quickly though no need to.
The Stop and Go traffic mode with the adaptive cruise control is great. Though i work remotely and have used it just once and didn't really even need to use it...but its there.
Havent ever use the park assist but do use the v360 view a lot. Great for tight spaces and parallel parking
My ins increased by 16 a month ( but we did trade in a 9 yr old Sonata)
Oil change annual or 10k miles and the dealership isnt 10..12 bucks more than other places. So the price diff is negligible over a yr plus loaner car if needed.
Overall i and the family love ours.
eta. As mentioned in other posts...Volvo is now a Chinese owned company. The XC90 isnt made in China (S90 starting in '18 is alongn with a couple of other models) the XC90 is still in Sweden or Belgium? But will be interesting to see if there are quality conflicts going forward Jeremy Clarkson (of Top Gear Grand Tour etc) has had ...4 XC90s I believe ....calling them the best overall family vehicle ..or something likeb that. But has the same concerns about the new ownership and if quality remains the same
ETA2. The Volvo on call / on demand is great. I cant compare it to other similar brands but....i got a text the other night that a window was down. I walk out and check...they all appeared to be up. So i get and and find out...driver window was down a little bit

Volvo finally after half a century began putting a bit of style in their vehicles.

It’s not a well made car.
It’s also from a China.
You could get sick

It’s the smartest car company by far. The SPA (scalable product architecture) is light years ahead of other brands.

My nephew and his wife have the 40 and they love it.... They got a free trip out of it, purchased the car from the factory in Sweden.
Volvo has a program where they will offer you a free trip to Sweden to purchase the car
Don’t know if they still offer that, but once all this quarantine shite is over, you may want to look into it. They got a free flight, and a couple nights in Sweden. Car was the same price as the dealer here in Louisiana.

Ever own one?
No.

How is maintenance?
Probably not awful. I’m sure it’s in following with other brands where service intervals are every 10k miles; so it will seem more pricey but it’s also less frequent.
quote:
Am I stuck going to the dealership only because weird engineering?
Probably. It’s a twin charged motor, there’s a lot going on in there. Also Volvo stands alone...no parts sharing with other brands. That said, you’d likely only own it under warranty or have a maintenance contract included with the sale.
quote:
Would you buy another one?
Have never had one, but it’d be on my short list of SUV considerations. Friend of mine has a 2016 or 2017 and says it’s been great. I ask him every time I see him.
Overall, I think they’re great and may be slightly less expensive than luxury counterparts. Don’t let Chinese ownership scare you off...that Chinese ownership salvaged a dying brand and made them competitive in the luxury market. Plus I believe they’re still built in Sweden.

U.S. News & World Report ranks the XC-90 #11 in its class.
Best Luxury Midsize SUVs for 2020

The 2020 Volvo XC90 has a lovely and spacious interior, lots of standard safety features, and good fuel economy, but it ranks in the middle third of the luxury midsize SUV class because of its poor predicted reliability rating and just-adequate powertrains.

I’d buy used anywhere from a 2017 to 2019 model. Thanks for the info.

Just traded our 2016 and couldn't be happier. Great looking car, technology is advanced but we had issues. Always little things. A heat sensor going out, recalls on hoses, side detection sensor going out. Biggest issue we had was the crappy service from the dealership in BR. They suck. Get a Lexus or get an Acura if you're set on buying an import.
Posted on 4/23/20 at 8:29 am to boosiebadazz
Don't buy one from the local dealership. Order it from the manufacturer in Sweden. They will fly you out there to test drive the vehicle as soon as it comes off the line.

Prices might be confusing because some options are $2-3k each. Some options are linked, where you have to have one to get the other...
