True.

So yeah, her uncle didn't have them on a leash. He admits that he let his guard down.

This place is gated, and they don't see many gators around here, so he just let his guard down.

He was on the phone while the dogs were walking around the pond, and the dogs mosied as around a corner. He heard commotion and a yelp, and ran over to see the surviving dog trying to fight the gator away with her paw, but by then the gator and dog were below surface and all he could see were bubbles. Got the other dog out of there.

He feels bad about it.

Sounds to me like he was too stupid to have a dog in the first place.

fricking sucks, and I hope he learns something from it at least.

Where is he from?

Usually, when I hear about this happening it's some snow bird from New York or a tourist from Nebraska.

Sometimes they need to know where things like this happen. If it's an area that gets a lot of traffic then they might need to move the gator. Or just need to make the public aware.

I only just met her, but she really was a sweet pup. I gave her head scratches right before we went to the beach/uncle went to walk them. Big smile on her cute face. frick.

Sorry OP there be some cold MF'ers in here. Has to suck having to see something like that happen to a family pet. Nature is cruel.

my 1st thought as well

if the dog was on a leash & it was me, I would be very unhappy, but would have let go of the leash

My thoughts as well. You can’t protect them from everything. A big arse hawk could just as easily picked it up and carried it off. Could have got bit by a poisonous snake. He wasn’t negligent by any means. He made a compromise and it didn’t work out in this rare situation.

I agree but FYI it was a pointer/ lab mix don’t think a hawk is going anything.

Since the uncle wasn’t paying attention and I’m not blaming him, my guess is the dogs were probably fricking with the gator (again not blaming them). But my parents dogs chase and kill squirrels, this is really no different just higher up the food chain.

Sounds like Uncle didn’t really see much, that’s good but it was likely not a good sight.

Does this sound too odd for words? Or Monty Python-esque?

Dogs aren't that foolish. Not in the real world. Maybe in cartoons. Or not.

I wouldn't go near any place with gators, much less walk my dog over near one. RIP to the dog- sorry your owner was an effing idiot.
