Send an email tonight that you'll be taking the next 3 days off for bereavement. For many companies, bereavement is separate from standard PTO, so you may get an extra 3 days of pay.

Had to layoff plenty in 2015 O&G before it finally got to me. I had a mechanic I let go who start whining and telling me how his wife just got pregnant unexpectedly and about his new SxS and 96 month note on his megacab.

Then he laughed at me and it was clear he wasn’t serious and was cool about it and understood that shite happens sometimes.

Tell him that if this is about the boxes, you only borrowed them. You're going to give them back.

I’d ask if he knows anyone hiring. But if you want to crack a joke, go for it.

Not sure what State you live in but weekly unemployment is $275 in Louisiana. What a joke.

Don’t answer the phone and he can’t lay you off

But if answering the phone is part of the job description, he could get fired rather than laid off.

Solid. I do know that one reason a lot of places do the layoff/termination immediately is to prevent employees from filing workers' compensation claims on their way out the door. Unemployment sucks--couple of hundred dollars per week and a good bit of red tape. OTOH, a "debilitating back injury" is worth 2/3 of your current salary.
