Golden Retriever. Easy answer

I'm a shepherd type dog fan, but for your son, those who are recommending a Golden Retriever are correct.

A rescue dog will be forever grateful to it's new owner

Newfoundland is a huge dog but probably best for kids. Labs and GR stay "puppies" for several years so they can get a bit much for a special needs child until they mature. Once labs and GR finally grow up, they are hard to beat but I'm still going with a new foundland.

Get a Golden, but REALLY check the bloodlines. A champion pedigree won't 100% insure its hip doesn't blow out but it certainly decreases the likelihood by a lot.

I have a black lab/pit bull mix

The reason for a purebred dog is you can get an idea of the temperament by meeting the parents and speaking to the breeder. You are basically buying a working dog who will be doing more than family pet.

Family has been through a few dogs over the years and we have had to get rid of a few different ones because of the issues with the kids. We have a French Bulldog now and I think it might be the best breed for kids, and your home, there is. So gentle, loving, and playful.

I had a boxer. Great with other dogs and the neighbors. Hoping to get another when I move to the burbs.

My Golden retriever has been The smartest and most affectionate dog I’ve owned, but my lab was pretty good as well, can’t go wrong with either.

I have had both a Golden Retriever and a Labs.
Both dogs were almost equal in temperament but the edge would go to the Golden Retriever. Summers would bother the Golden. I use to shave her twice during the summer months and it solved the overheating problem.
The German Shepard/Yellow Lab mix I have right now is extremely close to the Golden I had.
