Do you believe people should be able to achieve a 4.0 in school?

Or should the max be a 3.5 and the extra 0.5 be added to the lowest failing students? Further, those lower failing students also get and extra 0.1 from every student who has over a 2.5?

Also, every honors class and AP program has a mandatory set of 5 seats for those with the lowest test scores. It doesn't matter how many qualified applicants there are for each class, 5 seats have to go to the lowest graded students.

Finally, any student who maintains a 3.5 after the 0.5 cut must also give an extra 0.2.

Sound like a good education system to you?

the underlying argument against gentrification is that there is some nobility in being poor in poor areas, often related to culture

yet those same people bemoan the lack of investment from those who aren't poor, which values the "rich" culture

opposing gentrification truly is a "have your cake and eat it too" argument. it's literal logical failure

According to the SJW's, you can't sign up for it because you already benefit from it. You can't escape it. It's so powerful it defines you, and erases everything about you. Every choice you make, every thought you have, every job you've ever held.

You either accept that you benefited, and continue to benefit, from white privilege, thereby tainting your accomplishments and limiting their value/importance because they are a product of a racist system of which you are a class beneficiary. You also acknowledge that are subconsciously racist, even if you don't want to be.

OR

You deny white privilege, proving that you are racist.

The only practical argument I see against gentrification is that, particularly in urban areas, poor people are closer to public services they use which most upper class people don't usually require (health departments, WIC offices, public transportation, Job Corps, etc).

The argument would be that displacing them to areas where they are farther away from such programs only gives them more hardship.

Even then it can be bad. Some places, the property taxes rise much quicker than market value, and people get priced out of their own neighborhood.

What does this even mean , you're saying people own part of the neighborhood and it has to stay a disaster area because it's going to cost more to live there , we'll move then .
I don't feel bad , poor uneducated mischievous people has been the cause of me spending more money than I have to for years ,...

First, I don't understand why this is even an issue in some circles. Second, as I understand it, gentrification is simply the turning of a neighborhood from a slum to a 'more white' 'hood.

In Houston it ain't just white. The Heights is being gentrified. It's always been a name neighborhood. But now it is nice. All shades of rainbow are represented. But it does mean going from shite to nice.

In NOLA things are more black and white. So any discussion may get contentious. As mentioned it's sometimes inevitable. 20 years ago people were running to the burbs. Now the burbs are old in some areas and folks are willing to pay to stay in town.

What hoodish areas in NOLA are candidates to gentrify?

But gentrification doesn't seek out people of a certain ethnicity, it seeks out areas of a certain socioeconomic status. To me it's not a racial issue, rather a socioeconomic one.

Well after Katrina it was Freret, the Warehouse District, and the Bywater/Marigny. Now, it's expanding into the Treme', Irish Channel, Bayou St. John/Mid City/Tulane Ave, and St. Roch neighborhoods. Next will be Central City starting along Napoleon as soon as construction ceases, Basin/Rampart Street along the new street car line, and branching out along Canal Street around the new Iberville as the old theater district is reborn until Canal becomes nice from the River all the way to Carrolton.

This is the kind of shite we deal with here in Birmingham.

quote:

Resident after resident stood to complain – loudly. Not so much about the rift between the mayor and council. Not much about the failure of schools to give Birmingham students an adequate shot at success in the wide world. Not about increasing violence and crime in a city that is historically high in those things. The complaint was about white people. That development in the city put Birmingham in danger of drawing more of them.

quote:

"White supremacists run Birmingham because gentrification runs Birmingham," one speaker said, adding that Mayor Bell is the "puppet" of white people. Another argued that Birmingham suffers when neighborhoods like Avondale boom. Birmingham should not be allowed to gentrify, she said. Another came right out and warned that if development continues a white mayor will be elected, and everything fought for in the 1960s will be for naught.

Hollygrove might see some gentrification too once construction is finished. The surrounding areas (Black Pearl, Carrolton, Mid-City, Broadmoor, Old Jefferson) have boomed while Hollygrove has been mostly blocked off by the barricades along Claiborne. It seems like a prime area for investment considering it's completely surrounded by prime real estate and the housing is still pretty cheap.

LOL, no. Starbucks are a suburban phenomenon. Gentrified areas have independent coffee shops.
