Agree.

Is that supposed to be about me? You're just throwing shite at the wall if so. The only true part of that is that I am nearing my 40's but time is out of everyone's control, you dumb shite.

Yup.
I got out of the rat race. Did the professional musician thing. Was enjoyable and free. I was self-employed and set my own hours. My job was fully creative. Money was good...sometimes. It was nice finishing the month making $5000 doing nothing but hold a guitar. But then the next month it was $3100...and things didn't feel so good anymore. Then you meet that guy that made his entire career out of playing music and he's 58, driving three hours to some bar to play until 3am and then driving back. And he has to or else he doesn't eat.
Then I went to grad school to do the academia thing. But you better have that shite figured out early because once you have kids to feed and a wife to please, there's no time or room for you to take a huge hit in salary to get a few degrees.

I'm thinking of leaving the states.

I would move to either the far east or central/south america. You can live cheap, party your arse off, nobody cares what you are doing. I worked overseas and a lot of guys I worked with gave up the US life for overseas, some countries I know of that they lived inL
Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina, Thailand, Malaysa, Phillipines, Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam. All are cheap as hell, have good looking ladies, and are safe enough if you don't cause trouble.

I did the academia thing already. Oh well.

That's where I'm leaning. Teach English. Make a little cash. Freedom. Good weather.
What did they do for income?
I guess i just need to talk to someone who has made the move.

this would be my dream...unfortunately, I just can't figure out a way to make the $ work.
the western states have notoriously high cost of living, yet there is basically no industry so you can't really make much cash as an engineer.

Myself and the wife are seriously considering retiring to Costa Rica. Looks like paradise and you can get a 5000 square foot house on the ocean for like 300K.

I already have this worked out in my mind. Sub contract myself out to a few firms. Expand my territory to WY, ID, MT and CO. Would have plenty to do.

Possibly not. But following society's goals in life. Education, wife, kids, 40 hr per week job etc. Sounds like one big slave colony
How terrible, getting an education, having a wife that you love and loves you back, having kids that you can raise as your own, and having a steady income so you don't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from
If you want to avoid all this, go be a drug dealer in a low income area. Your hours are always in the middle of the night, you'll never have a wife, never see the kids you father, and you'll have a really exciting job of running from the police and other drug dealers. You never even need an education, you won't have a real job anyway. And you don't have to worry about saving for retirement bc you won't live to see your 40th birthday

Check out Guam. Technically you are still in the states, but you are reasonably close to Australia and New Zealand. From there you can be in SE Asia. You would need some specific skills to make money tho.

I'd go to Montana, buy cheap land, put a trailer on it.
Do freelance work that I could work from home and travel when necessary.

All the good looking women in costa rica are from colombia or venezuela, the locals women are but ugly. Go straight to the source.
