All the American I know who worked overseas did month on month off on oil rigs. Got paid a ton of money and spent their month off living wherever they wanted. You will have to pay US taxes unless you are willing to surrender your passport unfortunately. Those rules don't apply in Europe. The guys from the UK were making bank and paying income tax in the phillipines or some crap.

I know someone married to a Columbian. He says the country is really nice. There has been a lot of improvement in terms of security.

Glad you find happiness in that lifestyle. I know I never would, hence the hypothetical topic

Considering that too. I have a consulting side hustle which brings in a a~3K each month. At the very least I'll have that to hold onto.

Giving up what I have here is what scares me the most. But all the societal pressure to start the "settle down" mode is really starting to build.

Well, you do have to eat. Producing your own food is not t an option if you're allergic to work, so you have to find an easy job.

Best bet if you don't want to work hard is find an area with a low cost of living and buy a trailer outright. Then you just have a token amount in property tax plus your food and utilities, gas to get to work, etc. You should be able to cover than with a part time job.

That's where I'm leaning. Teach English. Make a little cash. Freedom. Good weather.

I know two people that have done this and one hated it just so you know.

One went to Japan and learned quickly that the Japanese work their asses off for all hours of the day. He tried to find a social group to hang out with and struggled. It didn't pay much, but he did put away savings. Just enough to fly back to the states after a year and find a new place to live.

The other settled in South Korea. He enjoys it, but he teaches English during the day and plays music at night. I saw him over Christmas, and he told me that he's getting worried about having a family. He's about to turn 34 and he works from sun up to sun down all year. No time for finding a wife, but that may just be his inability to find one.

I would have had my LEO career in the Florida Keys and stayed single. I'm okay with the career part in fact, I've loved my career for the most part.

Depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to live. In hindsight, buying a travel trailer at age 18, parking close to Vail, and working for ski patrol would've been cool for a while. Could save most of your earnings that way and invest. Move it to Florida during the summers and try to make it in golf. Would probably get old after a few years but would've been fun for a while.
