What does everyone usually do?

For me usually $1 or some quarters for a beer. Mixed drink $2, few shots probably $5. Bunch of shots around $50-$70 maybe 10 bucks max.

I just let them know beforehand I'll tip at the end of the night or something.

20% or $1. Whichever is greater.

Sitting at the bar or running a tab I total out and add 15-20%. If I'm walking up and paying cash for 2-4 beers at a time I tip around $1 a beer. Always $1 per if draft. Maybe $3 for 4 beers if just bottles. Depends on what they're charging and what amount of change I get back. If I'm due back $5 and the bartender gives me that instead of singles he's not getting a tip.

Ah, you mean consensus. Now this makes sense.

I didn't realize tipping bartenders was a regular practice until I was about 22.

I don't tip everyone in the service industry just because they serve me, especially bartenders who make a shite-ton of money as it is.

If they're fixing you high-end cocktails during peak traffic time, that's one thing. However, if they're just handing you a damn beer or pouring a shot, I don't see how that shite equates to the sort of laborious effort or entertainment worthy of additional financial compensation.

Alcohol in bars is already overpriced as it is. Why make everything even more expensive by tipping on every beverage?

Paying cash:

$1 for a beer
$0-5 for a mixed drink
$1 for a shot

Paying with card:
Depends, buy from 0-30% of the bill is >$20

Takes so much effort to turn around, grab that bottle, and pop the top.

Trust me when I say you get really good at remembering terrible tippers.

They aren't above screwing with your drinks.

Doubtful. Most bartenders I've seen don't even look at the receipt and just pile it up with the hundreds of others. Especially when it's packed.

I've got a question somewhat related....

I went to a bar recently and your standard draft beer was like 2.18 or 3.30 or some similar bullshite price. I gave them to the next dollar as a tip. It really feels to me like the bar is screwing their servers with this move. It was a high traffic downtown bar with quick interactions and no conversation between customer and bartender. I'm not gonna go to the next dollar amount for that and tip close to $2 a beer.

So my question is are the bartenders pissed about those prices and getting screwed tip wise or does it work out because enough people do in fact leave another $1 and the remaining change?
