Once selected, the Mercury 7 astronauts all pushed for design changes to allow for some degree of pilot control over the spacecraft. At least half the flights had some issue where this ended up being a good thing. Certainly made the difference by the time of the Apollo 13 mission.

He went to a small college in Ohio, but left without completing.

They awarded him an honorary degree AFTER his space flight.
