Yes. Buddy was just furloughed for at least 30 days and was told by their CEO to apply for unemployment.

This article states furloughed employees qualify. Haven't done deep research on the topic though.

quote:

While a layoff means a job was closed, a furlough is a temporary leave of absence, usually with an end date. Being furloughed is more beneficial, in general, since some employers continue to provide benefits and there is some form of job security. Macy's, for example, put a majority of its employees on furlough, but is providing benefits to employees enrolled in healthcare "at least through May."

Usually, unemployment benefits for furloughed employees vary from state to state, but, with the stimulus bill, anyone who was furloughed due to the coronavirus outbreak qualifies for unemployment insurance. Unlike filing due to a layoff, furloughed employees do not have to prove they lost their jobs.

I believe you can also qualify if dropped down to 32 hours as an exempt employee for that reduction in hours.

I was furloughed with no return date last Friday. I filed online with no problem.

The state has waived the 1 week waiting period, so file immediately.

Just be careful; that money is also taxable income. So you will receive a 1099-G.

You cant escape uncle Sam's taxes.

I had the federal and state taxes taken out of the unemployment check.
