I decided years ago to avoid air travel whenever possible.

Nothing new here. Maximizing revenue per plane real estate.
Feels great when you buy last seat for 2.5X what person next to you paid for theirs - through whatever circumstances led you to this unsavory supply-demand cross section of time.

Wanna know the biggest problem with the airline industry? Fuel, Fuel, Fuel. Southwest has been in bidness for over 50 years due to its original concept. All 737 aircraft, no meals, quick destinations, and the same maintenance routines.

Do you know what the profit margins are for major airlines?

There was an example where it was cheaper to buy 2 seats on the exact same flight with fees & taxes than it was for 1 ticket.
When I look for prices for my family of 5 or my wife and I, I have never to my recollection found cheaper flights as a group than as a single. I usually search as a single ticket for the best flights and then book everyone because it’s just easier math to compare $250 tickets than $1500. But I’ve never booked all 5 and been shocked by a low price change. Sometimes the kids tickets are just a little lower, but that’s all. And I’m usually booking 75-150 days out in the prime discount time

American Airlines net profit was nearly $850 million dollars last year and paid their CEO for than $30 million in 2023

They’re doing this to encourage the bigguns to buy two seats, one for each cheek.

If that’s true, I’m gonna start buying 2 tickets on all my flights to keep a buffer from the fatties.
They will absolutely resell that seat when nobody checks in for it.
