Oh, and I don't buy this story for a second. Like, not even a little bit
Zamora is a Hispanic name as well. It's not like he changed it to read 'Joe Smith'.
To me, that's what negates the whole premise of this little fable.

Not really. What if a guy is named "John Bertucci" as opposed to "Giovanni Bertucci"?

But that's not the case here.
And you really don't see a lot of Italians trying to make this kind of a point.

Firm job? No.
Well, among big firms in major markets, Joevequisha wins every time, at least for early associate jobs. Don't really see many Joses come through in this region.

He changed 2 letters, technically 3.

José
the likelihood of someone having this name and speaking English fluently is low

Really? And you've done studies on this, or are you just assuming?
Dude, this is a message board.
So no, giving the fact that this IS a message board it's proper due, I have NOT researched it extensively. It's merely an opinion on my part.

I have even heard the surname "Washington" carries racial significance & in many cases you are assumed to be Black .
Yes thats true. Jones and Johnson are both names with a lot of slave related background as well. Smith as well.

I know how Joe feels.
When I was looking for a job at thw bottom of the economy (early 2010), I was advised to drop the PhD from my resume.
The struggle is real
Damn.

Ramon Estevez had to become Martin Sheen to get a job.
Son Charlie Sheen (Carlos Estevez) had a better career than son Emilio Estevez.

Yeah but Washington is almost primarily a black name. Smith is a tossup

So it's now Latinos and blacks that are discriminated against?

Like I said in the part of my post that you happened to ignore, companies have a quota to meet relative to race/ethnicity (mine included) black/Latino/women have a greater than average chance of being hired.

I just googled & found on the Huffington post an article: "Washington ; The Blackest name in America"
According to 2000 cenus there were about 160,000 Washington's in America & 90% were Black & about 5% White.
A couple White Washington's in the article say they are a bit more sensitive to racism because their name has caused them to be victims of bias in housing , employment,etc.......
One White guy Larry(Washington) says that his father always taught his kids to apply in person for housing or a job
Claims that sometimes when he shows up for interviews, jobs or housing their is sometimes a sigh of relief from the Whites who are pleasantly surprised to see that he is actually White.
Percentage wise only Jefferson & Jackson were behind Washington as 'Blackest' surnames. Ironically Lincoln wasn't a very popular name picked by Freed Blacks (only about 15 % of Lincolns are Black).

Changing a letter means you switch a letter to another letter.
He removed a letter, put the end e in it's place and dropped the accent.
3 moves.
The article should read he changed his name. Or Americanized his name.

There oughta be a law that says if you hire 1 Joe you have to hire at least José as well.

I'm interesting in knowing if that was mostly a thing of the past or do Hispanic actors feel that they get type cast/limited roles because of their names or their look?
Cameron Diaz doesn't have much of a problem ,but her 'look' is obviously no issue.
The darker Hispanic actors/actress may feel differently about being typecast?

But then the article wouldn't be as popular if they did that
