I say we should decrease it.

Free nonviolent drug offenders.
Try to rehabilitate lesser criminals.
Hang the rest.

2015 may be an outlier, but it's still a slight uptick after 20ish years of decline

and it's still safer than when you or i grew up by a few orders of magnitude

all i see from that is that the thugs from Katrina had the biggest influence on those graphs, which are national graphs.

I think that's to be expected eventually. You can only have so many consecutive years of a downward trend before there is a bounce up

yup

and it may be a blip that ends up going down next year. i do think nationally we've had 20 straight years of the rates decreasing, but in individual cities it's not a perfect descent. they go down down up down down down up, etc. i'll post data from a very large, very public city (that still has major crime, unlike NYC which has had an insane drop in this time). even our worst major meme today (Chiraq) would require almost doubling of murders next year to get to its peak 20 years ago

that is NOT per capita data, either

There are cycles in everything and nothing new under the sun.

But I like this trend.

However, lessing violence gets overcome with increasing coverage.

Maybe we are heading to a place in societal evolution where murder becomes so rare, it really is news??
