re: Friend committed suicide

My Dad had a friend whose young wife was worried about him being suicidal, so she asked my Dad to come talk to him. He talked and the guy swore he was OK and would not ever do something like that...his wife was just a worry wart. My Dad left assuring the wife the guy was not suicidal. He no more got back into our driveway before the guy shot himself.. The wife screamed at my Dad and hit him after he arrived at the hospital...
There is no way to know these things, man. Just know it is beyond your comprehension to ask why, and go find a professional to talk to. These things tend to stay with us for a very long time...

Meh. I get your broader point, but that excuses everything.
"Rational people don't round up millions of Jews."
There are broad categories of suicide, and I have a certain degree of sympathy for folks making that as a legitimate end of life decision (terrible terminal disease, like early ALS, or perhaps aged out of ever contemplating even middling health again, etc.) and those with intractable depression.
I've known a handful of suicides to this point in my life and there were, to a degree, selfish reasons involved with each. Only 1 would I consider "irrational" - this person's private life was a shambles, directly related to this person's conduct - which may have been a symptom of yet other problems - I don't dispute that.
One of the others had some degree of substance abuse, but continued to be a functional, productive member of society.
One had a lot of financial problems and young kids at home. That's the one that hurts the most. One of the nicest human beings you ever met.

It's tough and sorry to hear that news.
Sometimes it's tough trying to figure out why and also reflecting on the past when times were better.

Prayers for your friend. I'm sorry for your loss. Stay strong.

No matter what suicide is selfish. All the pain the person felt just gets blown out to everyone around them. I still think about how much it makes me mad he did that to his family.
Like so many others you expected someone suffering from a mental illness to make choices about their life in the same rational manner of someone not burdened by mental illness, your friend likely though he was helping his family by freeing them from a burden.

Given your screen name and the news I heard today, I'm in shock, too. This must be the same person.
I had seen him a few times over the past month, and seemed ok. Got to know him pretty well, over the past nearly 10 years. Had hoped better days were ahead for him. Prayers to the kids.

If it's the same friend that I just learned about moments ago, I'm heartbroken. He was a football teammate of mine in youth & HS football. Very sad day.

Just seeing this.
Catholic High in late 70's or 80?
Knew the person in the obit but did not say anything but "unexpectedly".

May anyone who said an unkind word in this thread get what's coming to them.

Yes, he was an attorney. I'm just devastated for his kids.

Looked in Advocate. Didnt see anyone matching that description. Can the person be named? Sounds like he was widely respected and liked.

RIP Lenny. Very smart attorney.

It might hurt but you should still respect his decision. I doubt he made it lightly

This is what happens when the media wants to ruin your life by publishing false accusations that live forever online. I sure hope they are pleased with themselves. How do they sleep at night?

What was published? You talking about that stuff from years ago? Media has no standards when it invlolves ruining men. It's pathetic.

Yes, it is cruel and inhumane to have to live with that forever online.

I've known him since high school. He was a great guy, a very good attorney and an old friend. He was also a wrestling machine. I've heard a lot today and I can just say I'm shocked as is my wife.
A testament to his time on this earth is how many people are deeply saddened at his loss.
I know a lot of attorneys in this town, several in his own Catholic class and I would say he was one smart and tough guy that I would gladly have at my side.
God speed old friend from both of us.

I'm sorry, but this is just ignorant. And the reason you feel that way is becaue you have no close connection to suicide. Hopefully you never have to understand, but maybe next time just keep this opinion to yourself.
I have had two family members kill themselves. It just reinforced my above opinion. Kindly GFY.

Holy crap. He once represented me on some business dealings. I fished with him several times. I knew he had some personal issues, but damn, no idea about this.
