I do love a good burger and fries, easily in my top 3 favorite meals.

But holy hell, three times a week?

Also, are they talking about all types for French fries? If we have fries at home, they’re almost always done in the air fryer as opposed to fried in oil.

It isn't french fries, it is the seed oils used to fry them. Make french fries with peanut oil, lard or beef tallow and they are fine.

The cheeseburger and 32oz cola to go along with the fries certainly doesn’t help…

Yeah people eating fries aren’t just eating fries. I haven’t read the study but I assume it’s a questionnaire-based epidemiological study and not a bunch of people in a controlled environment for years eating nothing but various amounts of fries.

The “American cheese” that comes stock on most cheeseburgers is nothing more than shitty soybean oil with various coloring and thickeners.

And the average regular fry gobbler is likely to be otherwise unhealthy.

Funny the study is about fries but the seemingly more innocuous white rice is even worse.

Agreed... who eats french fries that often?! I'm sure they are making *wonderful* nutrition choices the rest of the time

I would think that most French fries are eaten with fast food. Who even eats fast food that often? I would consider even 3 times a month ridiculous. There's a reason America is fat.

Whew. I’m glad they’re alerting the alarm on this one. I’m going to swap my fries out for chicken nuggets as a side, next time I go to McDonalds. That seems to be the healthier choice from what I’m reading.

They didn't specify, but I am assuming just the cut of the potato didn't affect it.

They had this in there:

quote:

For every increment of three servings weekly of total potato, the rate for T2D increased by 5% and for every increment of three servings weekly of French fries the rate increased by 20%. Intake of combined baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes was not significantly associated with T2D risk

quote:

n a meta-analysis of 13 cohorts the pooled hazard ratio for risk of T2D with each increment of three servings weekly of total potato was 1.03 and of fried potatoes was 1.16

They only mention oil for frying one time:

quote:

Important changes in the composition of fat used for commercial production of French fries, which may increase the risk of T2D,54 have occurred over the follow-up of our cohorts. In the 1980s this fat was predominantly beef tallow, and in the early 1990s it shifted to partially hydrogenated plant oils with up to 30% trans isomers, which by 2010 was close to zero (unpublished data from our food composition analyses), and in 2018 the US Food and Drug Administration essentially banned partial hydrogenation.55 With additional follow-up we can further evaluate the effects of these changes on the relation between consumption of French fries and risk of T2D.
