Worst: it's real easy to lose sight of what's important. You're in college to get a degree. Be disciplined and don't let anybody lead you astray. There are guys who are there for the wrong reasons. They'll drag you down to their level if you let them.
Never understood this when people said this. This just goes with your friends in general in a frat or not. Plus For the most part, guys in fraternities come from well off/decent families that have instilled values to succeed post grad. People hate frats for no reason. If he finds a group that he fits in with, do it if not then don’t.

House, parties, sorority girls, and friends with all of that in common.

Be friendly, don't be a douche, and don't try too hard to be frat. Hang out with the other guys in your organization who are friendly, aren't douches, and don't try too hard to be frat.

If you’re asking about one specific thing, I’d kill a man to be attending a darty (outdoor day party) right now
More broadly, I enjoyed how there was seemingly always something going on. Just dicking around at the house on a Wednesday were some of my favorite days

The average frat guy is not nearly as cool as he thinks he is. No reason to be scared or intimidated by them

For example. You’re out of work and looking for something. One of your former fraternity brothers is in a position to get your foot in the door with a company. Life’s all about who you know. Not what you know. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
This exact scenario happened to me. Quit my previous job to learn a new industry. After the learning was done I was having trouble getting my foot in the door in an oversaturated market. Randomly ran into an old frat bro, we got to talking and he had a connection. Few years later I cant believe I went from 0 to this point in my career so fast. All thanks to running into an old brother.

You get a hundred or so guys together, it's almost like you could take over the world. Some of them are going to be really, really smart. Some are really good athletes. A few guys are probably musically talented. You probably have one or two artists. And you have have some frickups, but they're always good for comic relief.

Being able to pool lots of money to do stuff. Always having guys you were good friends with around to do whatever you wanted at a given time. In some ways it's nothing you can't replicate, but it's just easier/more organized because a) there are more of them and b) they're all there because they have some stuff in common. If there are 120 guys in your fraternity you're probably pretty strong friends with at least half of them and decent friends with another chunk.
That makes it really easy to find a golf foursome or find 3 guys to go on a road trip to meet up with a girl or go to some party with. If you don't duck hunt but want to, someone will take you. If you don't have money for something, someone will get you. If you don't have somewhere to go for SB/July 4/etc. etc. someone has a spot and will welcome you. It's just a nice way to do college life IMO (or was).

People all want the same stuff. Everyone wants reliable friends who bring something to the table. Nobody was ever impressed at someone trying super hard or being a dick or talking about his conquests or how much he could drink. We wanted guys who were good natured, would make grades, be polite to our parents, bring around girls, etc.

Our 1980's hazing involved physical torture, kidnapping across state lines, public humiliation and drinking piss.
Might have been worth it for the parties.
Might have been worth it for the parties.

Our 1970s initiation and brotherhood involved non of those top items but we did have great parties such as south seas …jam jam etc..
Best thing is common interest… and group funding of the activities….my closest adult friends where made in the fraternity and we still keep in touch . We had members from families that had legacy wealth and others that were sons of Air Force NCOs… you were able to see life outside of what you were raised in…
Btw.. as others said it was less money for me to live in the house.. eat real good food served at tables and weekly parties by being in the fraternity..

means to still think for yourself and be your own person and don't try so hard to fit in or follow every trend

I pledged in Spring of '80 and the hazing was real, but there was no piss drinking or torture. Might have been some public humiliation, but that's part of the fun. Lots of indentured servitude...
I didn't try to rock the boat, but I think members could sense that I wasn't going to tolerate being fricked with too much. Clean up after a party? I'm there and working hard(ish). Hit me? Be prepared to get hit back.
Overall, hazing is dumb. The forced drinking is really dumb.

Tell him to avoid it unless someone is fronting dues. The benefits you get aren’t worth the costs.

This can be done easily with basic social skills
