The NHC goes out and tries to find the strongest winds in the storm.
Guess that is why it is called "maximum sustained winds".

Highest recorded sustained winds are almost always like 20 mph lower than whatever the NHC says
I know you can find accurate sustained surface level wind projections 12 hrs out but I really wish the news and NHC would stress sustained rather than peak (or whatever term they use) in their main graphics,
People have been accustomed to associating 75 mph with a minor event. A sustained surface level wind of 75 mph will have you come to Jesus. Oh its only a Cat 1 wind. 75 mph sustained for a few hours will change the landscape.

was a dubious upgrade anyways based on potential. 100 mph sustained winds won't happen over land. It catches attention because of the category change.
Kinda fkd up they do it that way, eh?
Also between reading here and my wife asking about movements to the east, I’m about to inject bleach.

Be interesting to see how many downed trees this system does as it's not very strong but Entergy has seemed to neglected a bit of all the dead trees in my area. They came near my house and down 2 massive dead pines with the tree crews a few months back. Entergy had 3 other dead trees near them marked and the tree crews just ignored them.
They're still up so clearly Entergy man didn't get on the tree company.
