I don't plan to watch the video. It's not you I don't trust, it's Fox News.

Is this really a funding issue? Or is this just an example of an institution that grew accustomed to copious amounts of money and forgot how to actually budget and spend wisely?

Typical government Neanderthals, incapable of managing their budget. We need to cut more of their funding.

Also, there is so much redundancy within our armed forces. Why could the Marines not use another branch for air support, say the Navy or Air Force. Maybe they could lower their costs that way and contract support out when needed. We really need to streamline the roles each branch plays, and instead of constant in-fighting among the branches, we need to transition to support and cooperation among each other. This fractured system of military is expensive and wasteful, and ultimately makes our military weaker IMO.

Speaking of money, for FY 2015 military/defense spending was just under $600B making it the third largest expenditure of the federal government. The 4th largest was debt servicing (ie: paying just the interest) at just over $400B (and running a half-billion deficit not just in FY 2015, but into the foreseeable future).

To put it into easier to understand numbers, if the federal government were a person making $50k/yr (before taxes) it would be as if that person were spending ~$320/month on keeping up with the interest on their credit cards while charging an extra $10k per year.

Just a few years ago the "big 3" (SS, Medicare and Defense) were all pretty close to each other in budget amounts. In FY 2015 Social Security ($1.25T) and Medicare/Health ($985B) have FAR outpaced Defense ($598B) and with annual deficits of $500B, it doesn't look to change anytime soon.

TL;DR - Low defense spending isn't the problem, it's just a symptom of a much larger issue that's going to frick us all within the next 10-20 years.

I saw this earlier this evening. It was the lead story on Special Report with Brett Baier. It was pretty shocking to hear, especially considering it was the Marines themselves who were saying it. Things are bad. Training is being slashed, equipment is old and worn out. Squadrons are virtually combat ineffective due to down aircraft.

I know the popular sentiment on here when it comes to national security is people only want to have sunshine pumped up their arse how everything is great, we're far and away the strongest and nobody would ever dare frick with us. The truth though is not that rosy though. And considering developments in places like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, the US needs to wake it's arse up while we still can.

Well, maybe we could adequately fund the military? And stop funding the pieces of shite that live under bridges and beg for money and have children and live off the government. That could be a solution.

You're exactly right. There are many examples ranging from "$600 screwdrivers" to the billions it costs to maintain bases around the world to defend countries who should be defending themselves.

No, it will continue even after the current crop is replaced with reformers, who then become corrupted by the system. R or D, doesn't matter, too much money in the system.

Vast majority of military money is wasted on expensive weapons and systems, many of which do not work. How much money have the Marines pissed away on the Osprey? Regardless, they are in some congressman's district, and their lobbyists paid the right people.

I worked with a guy who was an marine. He said in Vietnam they were still using equipment left over from WWII. He said they loved to brag they give Congress back money from every budget, this was in the 1980s and he had been out a while.

This.

They need to bring in some outside people to completely change the spending model. We spend money on some dumb shite while important stuff is ignored.
